Charge issues(UPDATED)

Postby Mattious on Mon Nov 04, 2013 9:54 pm

At a wits end to be honest,

FRST, just won't hold its charge, and it's breaking me !

The car always needs to be jump started , regardless !. And after 20 mins of the car running my clock starts to pulse along with the interior lights and previously the heaters! I can turn the ignition of and maybe If I am lucky re start the car within the hour "rare tho"

I've replaced, the wiring from battery to , starter, then to the alternator I've cleaned the earths , I've even added an additional earth to the alternator ,

I replaced the alt With a second hand replacement from stevo and he had no problems with it. It's had a new belt.

I can't find any wires arcing out, or loose connections , the battery light on the instrument panel isn't lit up.

The battery is newish, and the water levels are fine!.

I have had.. A dodgy ignition relay that I had to sort the wiring and source a new relay (now my heaters and rad fan are not working)

Any takers , ideas , pointers ?

Cheers, Matt

Sounds like you have a short possibly ??

Try getting a multimeter on the battery set to read voltage and one by one pull each fuse to see if the reading increases ,as this should tell you possibly what circuit is shorting or drawing too much current

Worth a try

I feel like I'm a dog chasing its own tail ,

As previous treads indicated my car won't hold its charge or it's not charging!.

Sourced second hand Alt from stevo a while back, and my battery still wouldn't hold the charge or wasn't being charged after changing it over,

Today I went and got a brand spanking new battery, smashed it on jump started it up 1hours driving, turned it off and DEAD!

What I did notice is now, every so often the battery light comes on when booting it!, it's very faint tho!.

Any way the shop tested the battery and again readings were erratic, 14's then into 20's.

Help.... This is madness

Have you checked by pulling fuses one by one as I suggested earlier ???

Also worth checking the battery check light in the dash clocks itself as also suggested as the main live feed also runs through this ,so if the bulb isn't earthed slightly , eg not sitting in position correctly it would give you similar symptoms

Whatever fault it is I would say its on a high amps circuit eg window de mister ,heater etc etc

I know it sounds stupid but have you fitted a new battery

The alternator may be doing its job but if the battery is dead it will not hold a charge, so the car will run off the alternator but the battery will be dead every time you go too start it

Have you had a voltmeter on the battery to see what charge the alts putting out ,,if a new batterys fooked then the alt might not be charging or maybe overcharging you should see 14s when u check it

Hi, Me and my friend went through all sorts with his FRST. We fitted different alternator, Brand new battery, replaced wiring and still no luck we even bought an alternator repair kit and changed all of that and it still didn't work. Then just out of complete stupidness we swapped clocks from his to mine and vice versa and the battery started charging. Maybe worth trying another set of clocks. The strange thing is the clocks from his haven't caused any problems in my car so we've just left them swapped. Got to be worth a try if you can do it.
