Clutch???

Postby fesyturbo on Mon May 15, 2006 4:14 pm

Hello, I am in need of a new clutch for my FRST, its running 210bhp and cuttently has a ap 4 paddle in it which is slipping. I found this clutch a bit of a pig for 'around town' driving so ideally want something that is a little less harsh in respect to pulling away.

thanks

The fewer paddles the clutch has, the worst it will be for "around town" driving.

How much milage does it have you clutch?

I've heard that alcon 6 paddle clutch is good for 200bhp and it's almost like the std Ford one for everyday driving.

Some ppl say that std Ford clutch can coupe with 200bhp. I dont doubt of this but for how long? :-?

ive had the car for about 3 years now and the clutch was in it way before that, I think I may go for the alcon 6 paddle, although it is quite expensive

Helix organic in my S2. No slip and been in for some time. Peddle is very heavy and lacks feel though

Bottom line, with the standard cable operation and 200bhp+, the FRST isn't going to be much of a town car. The only clutches you'll get which will mean you have acceptable pedal pressure and no judder will not hold onto the power, and slip. The clutches that WILL allow you to use the 200bhp (e.g. the AP 4 paddle - if fitted with the correct pressure plate and hasn't covered huge miles like yours must've done) will judder, and not be good for town use. Paddle clutches aren't designed to last tens of thousands of miles, so you're no doubt near the end of your current clutch's life. Mine never EVER slips and is used in my 230bhp Zetec Turbo, so your clutch is very worn, you have the wrong clutch cover, or the friction pads are contaminated.

That said, Ian Howell at http://www.area-six.co.uk seems to have been successful making up a clutch kit that works well on the Fiesta...which holds onto higher torque figures and gives little judder and good pedal pressure. I haven't spoken to him about them in detail, but will do shortly. Drop him an email for suggestions.
