Coilover/ Alloys rubbing... HELP!

Postby AndyBlackFRST on Sat Nov 27, 2004 7:39 pm

My 17's are rubbing on my coilover on the back of he car..

The hub is spaced out, but still the wheel catches the coilover

Any ideas what I am doing wrong.. what would cause it?

Apparently you can turn the rear struts around 180 degrees so that the spring cup edge isn't on the same side as the tyre - to help stop rubbing.

Have you taken your suspension off recently or something - you didn't seem to have any problems with rubbing on the back wheels before did you?

Cheers,

Andy

Well - I think it's the same as he was running before suspension wise, so AVO coilovers.

Don't know the rest though - he's at Tom's party so he won't be answering any time soon!

Got the ally block from Carisma dave.. think its 10mm not 1000% sure though

Andy, What wheels are you running? When I had my Avo's on with the OZ's 7 X 15 et42 I had to run spacers all round to clear them. I have since changed to 6.5 X 15 rims and have ordered a set of custom LEDA coilovers with 2 1/4 front struts to help clear the wider 205/50-15 that I will eventually be running. By how much were the rear drums spaced out?

Don't matter which way round you put coilovers as the wheel should be below the spring platform.
ANDY Is it the strut itself the wheels rubbing on or the spring cup?

I'd guess when you took the shocks off the other day you lowered the car a bit more.
If you did, this will have involved moving the spring cup down and thus closer to the tyre.
If you can't space the wheels out any more you either need to get skinnyer profile tyres or raise the rear end back up until the spring cup clears the tyre.

Does any of that make sense?

I raised the rear of the car up about an inch or 2 so it wouldn't rub the arches.. muight have to use a 5mm spacer on the hub then to clear the coilover now

I think most people about 5 to 8 mil spacers on the back of the Mk3 and nothing to 5 mil on the Mk3.5.

You'll probably find that before you adjusted the height the collar was below the tyre. As the collar is actually a larger diameter than the spring, now you've raised the collar it is rubbing on the tyre.

As I've got 18's on I have a little more to play with till I reach the tyre with the spring collar.

You can get harder springs from AVO, which might stop the tyre hitting the arch if you wanted to keep it lower, just a thought :)

Otherwise it's gonna have to be spacers, which will probably mean you'll have to raise the car even more to stop the tyre hitting the arch again

why don't you try this.
Take the wheelx off. Loosen the spring cup nuts. Put the wheel back on. Stick your hand between the spokes in the wheel and adjust the spring cups by hand so the top nut just misses the tyre. Put the wheels back on and see how she sits.
If it's high enough not to rub your in business.
