Cone filters

Postby festaturbo on Tue May 14, 2002 10:14 pm

Dont worry im not starting the debat about the filters again, jus a few questions.

When it pisses with rain the filter gets wet [ERRR] of the water coming through the bonnet vents. Does any one overcome this?

Also the brether pipe that usually goes to the air filter, where do you guys put yours. Do you put it back into cone filter? Or use a mini breather filter on the breather pot? The pipercross kit has a take off so youcan connect it?

these over come the rain problem.

as for the other problem s ome just leave it to dangle and drip on the floor or to a catch tank, others fit a proper breather system which drains back into the sump.

Are those guards simply a piece of metal cut to shape, ir are they angled to allow the water to run off but away from any vital parts?

surely those metal guards defeat the object of having vents??? so how does the air get in/out of the engine to keep it cool?? having metal/steel guards will cause more heat within the bay??!!

Yeah but if there is a gap, hot air rises so the hot air will still be able to escape.

yea only as long as it can read road signs and travel around bends. :D

basically my point is every little thing like this makes a difference to ur engine just as not having sufficient airflow into the car (more so for intercoolers) you need for warm air to dissapate (again, far more quicker for turbo'd rides).

P.S. i know im being a buggar but i guess its just me.

Those vent covers do stop the hot air from properly escaping. As the vents are used for hot air escaping and increasing air flow into the engine bay. Any sort of cover will stop this and as we all know the FRST needs all the help it can get for cooling and air flow.

cheers :)

il get me coat. Are there any plates on the ford ones, as if not then there cant be a problem of water getting where it shouldnt. Those covers do look nice but it's a shame they dont help with the air flow.

So does anyone else have the problem of their cone filter getting wet when it rains?

I haven't really noticed it being wet after it raining. But i wouldn't worry about getting a little wet, it will soon dry out.

a) You either oil filters manually (aftermarket cone filters) or the breather system does it automatically (standard airboxes) which reduces water absorption and promotes foreign body trapping.

b) The metal plates won't be much of a problem as the air is flowing around them and out into the lower pressure airflow of the bonnet. As the pressure above the bonnet is lower the tendancy for the air to stall as it leaves via the vents and become inefficiently turbulent would prolly be less significant, if at all.

Or some other such caffeine induced nutsack :P

Project....well done for understanding the dynamics of a wing and bonnet vents. But the plates will restrict the amount of air leaving the engine bay. They are blocking the vent thus you will need to go quicker to get the lower pressure to take the same amount of air escaping than if not blocked.

i'm with Fezzy on this one as he is thinking EXACTLY wot i am. ANY kind of obstruction to the vents i.e. those kinds of plates will limit the amount and how much air can escape from the engine bay which is bad for performance and engine.
