could my breather be messing up my idle

Problem or technical question?

could my breather be messing up my idle

Postby rich1987 on Sat Apr 05, 2014 9:13 pm

ive got an idling issue high revs slowing coming the revs and slow hunting with my car and thought it was a air leek so today I stripped the inlet manifold off and replaced all the gaskets and took the injectors out and checked all the o rings which where fine and refitted them, checked for any leeks with brake cleaner and found none sprayed everywhere but still idling sh*te, the only thing ive found that If I clamp the pipe from my breather to the inlet it runs perfect no issues at all apart from a fair bit of smoke coming from the breather now I know the pipe should have a one way valve on it and mine doesn't but that shouldn't mess up the idle now is it my breather is crap or is there another underlining issue?

also when I took the inlet off to change the gasket I found a lot of oil in the breather pipe on the inlet that's why I clamped the pipe

Well, don't know for sure if your separator works as it should and separates oil from fumes, but if you find a lot of oil in the intake, something is not working as it should... at first you need to use a one way valve to the vacuum line,or else, each time the intake manifold is under boost, separator will be under boost too. Not very good... it could push oil trapped inside everywhere... also, since the separator is connected with the sump, a small portion of the boost will end in the sump, increasing pressure which is already more from the boost escaping from the piston rings. Not too good for the seals of the block... what boost are you running? Also, under idle, if the separator is blocked somewhere and keeps oil inside, the manifold will suck the oil in, causing problems in combustion and even detonation...is it smoking at all?I would start by using the ford separator, either the fiesta rs turbo, or the escort rs turbo.I use a Fiesta RS turbo and have no oil at all in the intake. Also try to source a one way valve. The trouble with idle could be from the separator. If the air from the breather filter finds it's way to the vacuum line that goes to the manifold, it could upset idling.Normally the vacuum hosing has small diameter to restrict air that could end in the manifold under some circumstances and increase idle.If when you block the vacuum line to the separator, the idle stabilizes, I would check for leaks or blockages.Did you alter anything prior problems start?

Yeah need to get my hands on a standard one I'm running around 12 psi but cars not on the road at the moment so never boosts, prior to this I change the valve stem seals gonna change my plugs and leads first as I think there's a problem with them, also I'm thinking the oil is because I've changed the side the oil separator is on so there ain't that panel to stop oil going into the breather, I've took inlet off all new gaskets everywhere checked the tps and idle iscv, the car isn't really hunting it's reving slightly high but it revs up and down on its own and really slow coming down on the revs, when I took the plugs out I found 1-3 a bit grayish and number 4 wet so changed them round and car started miss firing a bit that's why I'm changing them, could the plugs or leads cause these problems??

I would check the coil and plug wires for start.Do the plugs spark as they should? Also, stem seals wouldn't affect idle, tey could increase oil consumption but not idle...

Changed plugs and leads runs so much nicer but still revs high and and revs up on its own, randomly the revs just pick up and after a few seconds drop back down to 1.2k revs the car does need setting up could it be it just needs setting up or is it a sensor down? There's is defo no air leeks

I fitted a bailey breather when i first built my car an the idle was terrible i bought a new standard ford breather an it cured the issue an has been fine since, i think the ford breather has a valve in the pipe that runs to the air box or breather filter if you have an after market air filter to reduce air intake giving the signs of an air leak

You can use this breather too:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-CVH-CRANKCASE-VENTILATION-BREATHER-FILTER-ESCORT-MK3-MK4-FIESTA-MK1-MK2-/281310817264?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item417f6e6bf0
I used it for about 2 years without problem and replaced it because I wanted the original Fiesta rs turbo. I must admit although that this one, compared to the Fiesta rst one, is cleaner. I mean that the fiesta one due to design lets some oil escape from the breather to airbox hose because of gravity. The breather on the above link does not, perhaps because the breather to airbox fitting is in the top and the oil goes down.
