Diesel 1.4 tdci

Hi
New to the forum hope you can help ,My 1.4 tdci is running quite sluggish and when on motorway after the engine heats up and I try to accelerate the warning light like a cog with exclamation mark comes on and the car goes into limp mode ,on looking for any signs of problem areas I noticed at the back of the engine under the air filter box and surrounding area a lot of carbon like soot, does anyone have an idea where to start with this problem I cant see any obvious leaks .
