what are the advantages of having a diesel gearbox on a 1.6 cvh? i mite be buying one as my last one off a 1.4 lost all gears except 1st and 2nd which are now whining lol

All that stuff about diesel 'boxes being stronger which was doing the rounds a few years ago is pretty much an "old wives' tale" to be honest.

They aren't any stronger than a normal B5'box just have ratios more suited to the lower-revving, torquey diesel lump therefore you will have the potential for a higher top speed but only as long as your engine's power output (and the revs the torque curve stays flat for) are up to the job.

If you have got the 'box nice and cheaply though, you might as well use it mate.

Cons :

Gearing is wrong
No tougher than a normal box
No LSD


Conclusion - Don't bother. There are plenty of XR2i boxes out there or better still get an Escort RS Turbo item and get the benefit of the LSD
