Door lock mechanism failure

Problem or technical question?

Door lock mechanism failure

Postby waxdaddy on Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:49 am

Hi guys I've had a bit of a minor problem with my drivers side door since I got the car but now the passenger side has totally failed.

Basically the latch isn't latching any more, shut the door and you can just pull it open again with very little effort. For some reason this has also sent my central locking bonkers and now the locks just cycle when I unlock the drivers door.

Do I need to just replace the entire machanism in the door or is there another solution? I'm guessing it has just worn out over the years?

If they do need to be replaced, is there a difference between the central locking cars and the none central locking ones or do they all fit?

Make sure the catch pin is set up properly, it may have shifted inwards a bit over the years. Loosen it off by the 2 bolts a touch and move it outwards 1/8 inch and see if that helps, if not try another 1/8 inch. Failing that get another mechanism from ebay/scrappy.

Also get some carb-cleaner, small brush and some silicone spray grease then clean up and re-lube as much of the mechanism as you can get to, plus put a little thick grease in the mechanism where the catch connects afterwards.

I can't seem to find a pair of mechanisms for the mk3 with central locking anywhere... I went and asked ford today, they have the right hand side but not the passenger side
