dump valve or chatter?

Postby slaney21 on Tue Jun 09, 2009 12:11 am

hey all

before i bought my rs i asked the chap to refit the dump valve as i wanted to see what it was like to drive with one on. I have been searching up here and there and i quite fancy the idea of just normal "chatter" as i get a lot of pissed off looks from people when driving out of work or into town as most old people seem to literally s**t themselves when im driving towards them! Some people have said taking the dump valve off will reduce the lifespan of the turbo etc but is this true?

also what is everyones opinion on dump valves or chatter? comment away :)

i am not really sure on the differnce.

i am not all that on this loud hiss sound.
but i would have it on to help my turbo.

but i love this sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baUEBAKw5vQ

sounds mint. :D
would be better on a higher powered car i supose.

I prefer chatter, loved the way mine sounded. But really wanted the original airbox fitted, which no longer makes any noise. So refitted the dump valve on mine.

i love the chatter noise but it does brake the turbo eventually cause its turbo stall where the air goes back through the turbo. but yea chatter is better than dump valve lol im having chatter! for a little while anyway

my car is 19years old with the original T2 with 112k miles and its been chattering for most of its life and it hasnt broken. It doesnt even smoke or use oil and runs 13psi happily. Many things can contribute to a turbo breaking.

The idea of a dump valve is to basically release pressure that returns to the turbo when you come off boost without a dump valve this pressure, excess air whatever you want to call it returns to the turbo and over time should in theory damage it. Although you may be lucky and it might not. I would always say I love the sound of a chattering car but I just spent £400 odd on mine so I would prefer to know its gona last longer and have a dump valve... I've got a universal induction kit on my car to and that makes its own gorgeous little woooshing noise, its brilliant my mum hates it.....PERFECT! lol :bonkers:

Okay lets clear this up......

Yes there is a back pressure that pushes back on the blades of any turbo. The dump valve will release this and give you the sounds. Now this back pressure is there with ALL turbo's but the most "at risk" turbos are your high pressure turbo's. With a T2 it is small, compact and shouldnt really be pushed past 12psi (standard turbo), thus making the turbine blades at "less risk" of back pressure breaking of the turbine blades.
The "chatter" (nothing to do with wastegate chatter) or flutter is the blades of the turbo "stalling" or slowing down, the same as a helicopters blades make a noise. You hear this very well on a FRST when you add an induction kit, as there are no restrictions from the turbo to airfilter, unlike an ERST and the airbox doesnt get to muffle the noise.

This has been a public information announcement for FT.com, by some old Scottish guy :D

I do like the whole chatter kills turbo's thing.

But standard car's do it - You just cant hear it usually.

ok so just to clarify,

will having a t2 without a dump valve kill it over time then a t2 with a dump valve??

i want to keep the dump valve on mine but want a slightly quieter one :)

Right i'm going to add to this subject all modren cars are fitted with recuirculating valves to stop the damage on the turbo escorts use a twin piston valve ie DV26 or DV36 fiestas only need a single piston valve ie DV24 or DV34 my 76000 mile FRST had damage to the blades when i bought it so vince @ cr turbos done a great job and brought the turbo back to life :) My advice always have your valve on :Q

Thats because modern cars have bigger turbo's than the old T2 a FRST has. And after 154,000 miles my T2 has zero damage, zero leaks and is quietly gathering dust in my lock-up
