Dump Valves? Worth It?

Postby Percy! on Thu Sep 02, 2004 8:14 pm

Can someone tell me how they work? (basically will do)

Just wondering if they increase performance and if it would be worth me getting one?

I am collecting the parts for a 2.0 zetec turbo using a T3 if it makes any difference.

Also I assume there is good and bad dump valves, any recomendations and approx prices would be helpful.

Thanks

Im sure i typed out a whole bit about D/V's and my experiences .........

They do:

make a noise
decrease throttle response

They dont:

increase performance
lose engine power (as per rolling road sessions in my car)

I have a Collins twin piston D/V which i take off and clean/grease the seals about once a year.

Ive got a bailey one n i love it, it has a proper evil dump when running high boost.

Dunno bout other makes but bailey offer a few colours too + i think the dump valve and fitting kit is like £100-£120

Took mine off.

When your on the motorway and you have one there is a slight pause while the air builds up, without one it's an instant response.

Incorrect though,

The wastegate is a metal flap, it doesn't chirp - that's the sound of the aire reverberating off the turbo blades and back though the air filter.

Does seem like a good idea, as all I seem to get is different opinions, some love them some hate them.

also abit about the different types piston, recirulating etc etc

Percy, Go for the power sound which costs nothing and gives better throttle response and doesnt sound like something from the 90's :P

plus it sounds so much better than a dump/v , imo sounds more performance wise as apposed to tarty. no offence to people who have them.

I got one of them Bailey ones with the foghorn like thing coming out of it. When it dumps at high pressure it sounds like some sort of explosion! It is bloody loud.

Its coming off when I get me new turbo.

maybee in uk they would, but here in Portugal only know of 6 FRST that are rolling.
Everybody says I have a 2i with vents on the bonnet, not everyone is aware that there is a bigger brother to the 2i fiesta: the FRST.

Surprise attack is just class

sorry i havent got any pics of my engine but mfi is (mechanical fuel injection) basically its the ke-jetronic system you find on erst's. not entirley sure of all the differences but i know it uses a fuel distributor and metering head as oposed to throttle body and electronically controlled injectors. maybe i am wrong but thats how i understand it. and the reason it does no chatter is because the plate on the top of the metering head shuts when your are not accelerating and so does not let the sound out.

arent d/v only really used for engines that have mad amounts of psi?, not really for the old frst. Things like cossie and supra's and the likes.

well maybe, but my old boss used to build group n rally evo's and because they wernt aloud to remove parts they had to leave the standard dump valves on. but they were so useful towards the performance of the car that they used to glue them shut. so if the pro's dont use them im sure they must be of no major performance gain.

cheers chris :D

Most higher performance turbo engines have a recirulating dump valve.

its just down to personal taste but most high boost cars need to run them
i like them both but the d/v gets a bit annoying after 5 mins!

how a dump valve works

Postby FezziRSOwner on Tue Sep 21, 2004 6:24 pm

dump valve closes up when foot is on accelerator(AC) this is when boost is being formed, when backing of AC the dump valve opens up causing boost pressure to be released through the dump valve and thats how u get the wooooooosh sound, wastegate sounds s***-ot ..........better and louder if u have an air filter.......... by the way it cant be heard with a dump valve on. try it!!

T3 conversion is a great idea and so is the idea of a 2.0L

Actually mine used to chatter at <3000rpm and dump above so I had the best of both sounds.

But the throttle response was a bit poor so I took off the DV.
