EGR removal

i was chatting to a mate of mine and he said that he removed the EGR pipes from the exhaust manifold cut the pipes off flush and refit them he said this made his car alot faster because the pipes are so big they restrict the exhaust ports has anyone else tryed this and has it worked or did it fail :-? PS sorry my mates car was a XR3I 130ps zetec and i have a 1.8 si
