Emmisions

My 1990 H-reg XR2i is completely rotten so I have decided to buy a basic L-N reg and swap all the parts over. The only problem I can think of is that will my 1990 XR2i engine pass an emmisions test for its MOT. Can I just fit an exhaust system off 1.8 or 1.6Si with a cat fitted. Is it gonna be to much trouble fitting the CVH engine or should I just buy an engine out of a later car like a Zetec.

Emmsions take into account the older of the two(car or engine). If you can prove the age of the engine with something then the emmisions test is for that engine, phone DVLA to confirm what bits of paperwork you will need..
