have u checked the oil? could be low oil causing the tapping, change the oil and filter, not just the oil, and make sure its the right amount..
If that doesent cure it, then if the tappings a ticky sorta sound then ide say your tappets are on the way out, if its a deep knocking sorta sound you have bottom end trouble and its proberly the bearings on the rods knocking about..
Tapping or knocking isnt good, but sometimes can just be an unlubricated tappet due to having low oil.. however driving it with it in such a state will kill the tappet off over long ter, short term might leave it tapping forever.
If the worse came to the worse and your tappets were nackered, then you would have to look into getting the tappets replaced, but ide say as a matter of course just try to find yourself another 8v head and either fit it yourself or get someone else to do it.
if the engines been ran without oil or oil changes then it would proberly make sense to do the whole head if you found it to be a problem in the valvetrain.. if the bottom sounds rough, then ide suggest a new engine.
sorry mate i know that sounds bad of me to put some bad news up.. but like i said, could just be low oil.. my ex girlfreinds 1990 EFI xr3i ran the same engine as your car and must have done at least 300,000 miles.
still ran alright.. but it was shagged at the same time.

that thing near the header thank your talking about is either the breather filter, or your on about the ISCV, but i dont think they are you problem at all. You should have a bosch ISCV which is pretty much a lifetime part.
A new head could cost you anything from a fiver up to £100+ it depends how much you want to spend really.
Ideally, you want to find a low millage xr2i with the 8v engine, it has to be from this car, or a fiesta turbo, nothing else.
You can get the heads from late mk4 escort xr3i's. but they have to be the EFI models, not MFI.
just find an xr2i 8v car at the scrappie, ask them to start it for you and hear it running.. if it doesent tick, or only ticks for the first few seconds, its alot better than the one you have already thats for sure.
if you ask me, bearing in mind gaskets and everything else you will need for the job, its actually alot easier and could possibly be alot cheaper to just get a new engine to put it. i dont mean brand new, just like i said, from a sweet running one thats rotted out or been smashed up.
plenty around mate.
