Engine problems please help!

Hey all.

I recently got in my fiesta and turned the key to find that it would turn but would not start until after about 7 or 8 turns of the key. I checked the spark plugs and sure enough they were at the end of life or past it because two of them were cracked to pieces. Anyway I have put in 4 brand new Bosch Spark Plugs and now it starts. However now when i try and start from cold it wont turn at all until 3 key turns then it randomly springs to life. What could the issue be here? With the spark plugs do i need to set the gap or do i just leave them as is?

Also my cars idle is terrible. Once started it will go really low revs. Yesterday it went so low it almost stalled. It also has these times where it will surge, for example I press down on the accelerator and it revs up but when i let off the pedal the engine revs up and down up and down and this has caused two leaks in the exhaust (one on the back box and one on the pipe connecting the back box to the mid section) The exhaust was only changed last November when it went for its MOT. The only thing I have done under the hood is changed the air filter because the old one was split and just useless. I did purchase a Bluetooth OBD2 scanner as my car is 1996 and has the connector but i cant get into anything as it cant get the data from my ECU. Any help on these subjects would be great.

Car details: Ford Fiesta 1996 1.1 MK3 hatchback petrol.
