Engine Swap? 1.6 zetec to 1.8 zetec

Postby McGoo 69 on Sun Mar 18, 2007 11:35 am

Right my zetec engine is burning oil im either gonna change the valve stem seal (i think thats what it is) if no joy ill rip out the engine and change it to a 1.8 so the engine swap i worth while.

Now what i want to know is what zetec engines fit into my fiesta si? mondeo/focus/escort etc

or are they all the same mounting points?

i take it ill have to swap the engine loom, bigger throttle body etc etc so it all works. ill probably put rear discs on too.

How hard is it to change a engine? ive never done one before but youve got to start somewhere?

ive rebuilt motorbike engines etc but cars are a different kettle of fish hahaha

im am mechanicly minded and ive done alot of work to my car without problems so i just want tips realy.

the 2.0 would be a better choice. You'll undoubtedly get bored of the 1.8 105/115 bhp and add the RS18i bits (if you dont fit the RS18i engine anyway) and then you might aswell have put the 2.0 in! :)

With the help of a few forum members and my brother, I went from a 1.6 zetec to a 1.8 RSi and was very impressed! :D ...but soon got bored and decided to add a turbo

Very straightforward swap. Use the 1.8/2.0 ECU, MAF, TB. Anything else that doesn't come on your 'new' engine, you can use from your 1.6. Even the manifolds but the inlet manifold will be a lot less restrictive if you use the RS18i or Focus 1.8/2.0 one.

Hire an engine crane and take your time. 8)

Go 2 litre mate as ironically the insurance is often cheaper than when dropping the 1.8 engine in
