Postby Jonezy on Fri Oct 13, 2006 11:04 am

is it true that if you were to take the engine from say a 2ltr focus, and chuck it in ma fiesta, would my fiesta then take the insurance group of the focus, eg grp 9 in this case.
sounds too good to be true and probs is but just summat i heard.

sum1 tell me if this is true

I doesn't work quite like that.

Insurance companies look at what group your car is now and what group the engine came from and from that they work out the greater risk.

This is why putting a 2.0 mondeo (group nine) into an Si (group eigth) isn't thought of as being so risky as it's only a one insurance group jump. I don't fully understand it as it has the power as the group 15 RS18k engine!? :-?

The problem is that when you have a base model fiesta, say group four, and retro fit all the Si equipment onto it that will jump it up above the group eight of the Si itself. Also when you tell them that you are putting a group nine 2.0 into a group four fiesta shell it suddenly becomes a whole lot more to insure than a 2.0 litre'd Si.

An example of this is through Adrian Flux, for me a few years ago. All were for fully comp insurance.

1.6 Si - £604
2.0 Si - £707

1.1 Classic - £525
2.0 Classic with all the Si brakes and suspension - £1475.

That was a few years back with no no claims. But phone up and check out with Flux yourself, you may be surprised.

2.0 at 18 wont last long. Best bet would be go for a 1.6 si, then in a year or so go for the 2.0 conversion. I pay £1000 at 21 with 4yrs no claims. I cant insure my 19 yr old gf on my insurance as she is too young, so i doubt that an insurance company would let you go third party.

Just because I keep talking about definetly doing it doesn't mean I'm actualy going to do it.
