Escort long roof, off the road...
hey, after the XR project going down so well (really not!)
ive been upset, and went comfort shopping
put a deposit on this, was located 50miles away in Abergavenny, whats more they will deliver it for £40 on top, cost me that in petrol to go view it,
which is the main reason i want a diesel run around, the si is too much on fuel just going to work, £30 each week atleast, and im only doing 15hrs a week, its just not on
its a silver t reg 1999 Ford Escort Turbo Diesel finesse estate, 136k on the clock,
bad points it needs atleast 1 lowerarm/wishbone, during the test drive it pulled /swerved on gearchange and the turning was quite wobbly, suspect the bushes are franked
i noticed the drivers sill needs 2 or 3 plates welded in as they have holes in it and some rust spots
both rear arches by the doors are rusty, but its not deep thankfully, i can just treat and spray
needs a pair of front tyres, and is missing a backbox,
apart from that it needs tax and test and im laughing
all this and ive got a T reg diesel estate workhorse for less than £400
pics
good points, apart from the wabble, it drives really well, plenty of power on tap, pulled off with my foot down and come 3k the wheels were spinning
interior is in good condition (roof lining over the rear seats was sagging a tad)
pas, central locking, electric windows, Turbo diesel with intercooled model 90ps/89bhp with far more torque than its equivalent the 1.6 zetec, with far better fuel economy too
foglights, tacho and half a tank of juice!
will be getting delivered by thursday
ill fix it up in the garage as its still SORN, weld some plates in, hammerite the sills, if its a close colour match (you never know!) ill do the arches while im there, do the wishbones and fit a backbox and put it in for a test then tax, adn the si will come off the road for some TLC
shes not going anywhere thou
(if anyone has a estate backbox performance or standard get in touch!)

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
little update on it, for 136k it drives very well, it was waiting for me on a delievery truck soon as i got home, give him the rest of the £240 notes and the log book was signed
after playing witht he fact its an estate, got her skirt up, it needs either a new driver sill, or a rather lengthy sized plate welded in, ill check prices of sills and will decide
a passengers wishbone as suspected, the brakes are quite shot, so ill pop a spair set on that i have, same 240mm's nothing fancy
and a repalcement backbox as ive got nothing but the pipe it was connected to
someones disabled the aircon, removed the pully and used a non aircon belt,b tu the pump and pipe work remains
needs new coolant as it looks dry, plenty of rusty colour grot in there too
and the pas fluid is low, the engine could do with a service, even a timing belt as i hear theyre popular faisl on these, and i aint risking it for the sake of about £20
once these are done ill put her in for the mot and tax her if shes passes
pics of the work to come
and please before anyone states it, yes the exhaust has been FULLY paid for now

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
thanks ill use that inspiration while fixing her up
ordered a pair of wishbones with the 6 nuts/bolts
will pick up the backbox ive seen tomorrow after work, thats if they remove it in time
fit my two front Gti wheels for the mot
then after i sort the sill ill boot it in for a test, then if passed tax it and swap the insurance over, which incedently is of no extra cost, i love Quinn
once its on the road, might actually leave the standard 5000 radio unit in, its a good unit with ford cd changer compatability
might get one of them:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120704122939&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en#ht_500wt_949
followed by the monitor and ps2 fitted for camping, and a boost gauge tapped into the intercooler
15psi/1.03bar standard boost, to keep an eye on things
some pics
various history with it, upto 2005 ford service history, im owner no. 3, first owner sold it may 08, and its been local to abergavenny from new, untill me

Looks OK jon, but you bought this in order to save on petrol in the Si?
Surely petrol in the Si is cheaper than insurance, tax and diesel for running a second car? Might just be me though.

everyone keeps saying that to me, but no it wont be
ignoring the fact what ive paid for already, the tax and mot will just wither on the Si, it will be used now and then and for car shows, but apart from that no it wont be used so im not paying for two cars at all
and it wont even be insured, the insurance is getting swapped onto the escort
hasnt anyone ever had a second car before?!

For which it will need to be MOT'ed, Taxed and insured, surely? Unless you transfer the insurance over every time there's a show, which means a £20 admin charge...

I think he said somewhere the swap was for freesies ?
Either way yes, I run two cars and the insurance on the second is murder as it's a brand new policy.

if its moondust silver hamerite is an ok match but wouldnt do the sills unless its a part that you cant see as you can see the diference from a mile off. whats the plans then ?you doing anything proformance wise ? id just bodge the sills up hamerite em then get gti side skirts and alloys and replace that tailgate other than that it isnt that bad but it is showing how many miles its done

, the si has tax and mot, was both done in feb, so the tax runs out end of sept, aka end of show season 9minus some combe track days i believe)
and no the insurance can be swapped free, its a phone call away, used to do it with my old green mk3 when i was doing the engine convo on the mk4, kept transfering it every 2 week intervals, in the end i had it covered for almost 2 months, its free of charge and doesnt change the premium, but the escort will be the main policy covered car now (well the only)
but if i miss the si or bored of driving slow i can just ring and ill have cover from the next quarter of the hour, simple as that

sadly im next to near doing that, ive just finished cutting the worst of the rot on the sill, its about a metre long of a cut out now, ill copy it to new metal and weld it in
the inner sill seems to be a bit corroded, ive applied kurust, but thats the best i can do without going nuts and replacing the inner and outer sill, which aint really viable atm
performance wise, it has the 0-60 time of a 1.25 mk4 or not far off a 1.6 Si so it should keep me happy enough
if i do get bored, i can turn the boost up on the turbo and turn the fueling up, pre boost and during, but it will smoke more and add stress to the turbo
further more id consider a mondeo ST tdci intercooler to be moved to the bumper, apart from that theres not much i can do, unless i try to find the very early turbo and bosch fuel pumps they had, but phased out quick so theyre rare
im fitting a boost gauge soon, the take off nipple has already come through the door, found it needed a drivers outer CV gaiter, so got that from work, ill fit that when the wishbones come (they did but i werent in)
i may fit gti skirts, but i dont wanna do that sorta stuff to this, it will only make me want to do more
sorry henry, yea you all do, but id of been ages with a big list of people lol, what do you do insurance wise?
swap or do you have cover on both? any vehicle?

Insurance wise for me, its cheaper for me to insure both cars fully comp for me and the misses than it was for me Third party f&f on my old RS
I couldnt be arsed with the constant phone calls to swap it over if i just wanted to go out for an hour.

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
i can find out when im swapping them over, should be tested on friday if all the repairs go well
anywho, update
two new part-worn tyres as one was slightly bald on the shoulder, didnt want to risk it
some new bits to go on
first mod, i had this knob from ford fair 09, i finally know what it fits
boost take off
anyone want to buy a knob?
then tonight i started on the swapping of bits
new calipers next to the old, left escort, right puma (fiesta also)
knackered gaiter, im struggling to remember how you get new ones on, doesnt the driveshaft have to be removed from the hub then the spider unions taken off and slot the gaiter over? and repack with high velocity grease?
completely shot discs, worn down, and very odd uneven wear front and back, bak has mountains on it!
stil cant understand how it can be caused, i always swap the whole setup to avoid it (including calipers)
passengers werent soo bad, but discs were both seized on the hub
new from a puma
on but not bled, interesting fact, the banjo fitting escorts use works on the fiesta/puma/ka calipers, but if you have 13" wheels id not recommend it as the pipe coming off it goes straight up and would confer on the wheel, the 15" wheels hits has is more than fine though
battery is now disconnected ready for the welding, the bad rot ont he sill is cut out, the inner sill has been reust teated, i know it aint the best way but it will have to do, i might squirt some crude/used oil over the insides of here, but im scared it will ignite when im welding
not many pics to show you as im not particually proud of this method
cutting
cut out in once piece for coping
(thats not rust in the above pic around the cut, a reflection of the orange carpets)
kurust was layered on all visible rust/bubbling ill eave that work over night, ive also grinded back where the welds will be going ready for tomorrow
more of this tomorrow

Easiest way to do the boot Jony is to get a stretch boot and a cone.
Ball joint out, hub nut and habd the driveshaft to the side. Then cut the old one off, turn the new one inside out, plenty of engine oil on the cone and just slide it over. 15 mins tops
Here you go,

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
the brakes are sorted, put the old calipers back on with the new discs, bought new pads from work, bargain! were £25.99 trade knocked down to £10.79
will paint the calipers up while doing the wishbones, which come today, still waiting on my new exhaust, need to sort the horn, hoping its something silly like the fuse gone
ive also got my gaiter to put on while im doing my wishbones
sorted the sill today, welded it all up, and now undersealed it, it aint pretty but it works
giving it another coat tomorrow

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
update,
wishbones done, C.V gaiter done, was a Bic™ this, used a plastic cup in the end haha, with loads of vaselin to slip it over the joint (sex jokes anyone?)
brakes are good, stop me well and responsive, two new tyres on the front, sill plated up nicely and undersealed, even got a cd6000 headunit to put in if i fancy, but if i do i cant use my ipod, ive been using one of them cassette adapters so far, and the system is bloody good considering its all standard, might add my sub to the deal if my dvd player goes in and it should be great
took it for a brief spin to see how the car drive with new wishbones, bloody goes like a dream, its very fun considering its a diesel estate, and it has got some poke too, nimble and quite
ive choosen right with her
just need to get the tracking done, the horn isnt working, ive had the wheel off checked everything including the tracks on the back, fuse, nothing, must be the horn itself or the wiring looks bad down there.
and need to adjust the aim of the washer jets, and shes ready for the test which is booked in on friday afternoon
all for now

Re: New runaround, T reg Escort Finesse TD estate
picture update to coincide with the above
O/S lower arm removed
with the two wishbones and the gaiter done, this arrived this morning
coudlnt for the life of me get the old pipe off the mid section while on the car, hammering the hell out if it and it wouldnt budge, even penetration fluid wasnt helping
so had to take the whole midsection from the cat back off
back on the car
all done with that, not that it was loud without it, but its nice and hush quite now
pictures of the sill repair, it will get a new sill one day as this is temporary, i know crappy welds, but its the best i could get out of my crappy mig, even with gas!
also replaced the fog light bulbs
ive sorted out the washer jets, the tube was blocked, a spare tube/hose is fitted and is much better, the jets aint all working, but 2 our of four will do, each side is working
also aimed them right
then began topping up the fluids, coolant and powersteering fluid
in the middle of sorting the horn, after checking the fuse, button behind airbag, connections behind them, and the runner behind the wheel itself, nothing all fine, then checked the wiring under the wing, rust earth cleaned still nothing, tested horn itself, knackered, so if i can get another in the morning before work good stuff, otherwise ill have to try and use the fiestas one for the test untill i can sort one out
all the cars ive broken for sapres and no bloody spare horn, gonna gather loads from now on!
MOT is booked for 4pm tomorrow, so wish me luck
