I fitted a 2 litre blacktop engine in my mk4 fiesta and it runs very well. The thing is ive mated the 2litre mondeo exhaust and cat upto my middle section on the fiesta tempory to get it going. The middle section is a 1.2  This might sound silly but do you rekon my car is restricted or being strangled by the small exhaust

Absolutely.

I fitted a stainless exhaust to mine replacing the rotten one that came off, properly strangled the system even though was only about a 10mm step-down after the cat, struggled to pull past 4k rpm. I didn't realise it was a smaller bore at the time as the old system was so fubed and it's sold as being suitable for turbo cars (which it obviously isn't).

Swapped it off for a mild steel system of the correct diameter (60mm) and it pulls solidly to 7k in every gear now, got a 75mm stainless system waiting to go on which should free it up a little further right at the top end.
Nothing to see here...
