F393 RDL restoration project
This fieta started life as a 1.6s but was bought to re-shell my other very rotten 1.6s into but after putting 4000 miles miles on the 1600 i rebuilt with cam, headwork and twin dcnf's i decided i wanted to make this one a turbo instead If im gonna do it i wanna do it properly so another engine rebuild and complete shell restoration required then, but i want to be differnt and not do am RS rep so im using a FRST bottom end which im rebuilding with a worked xr2 head, part of a turbo technics kit but using a T3 turbo and sierra cosworth intercooler I know im going to run into a couple problems along the way as its not as straight forward as going efi but ill overcome those as i reach them.

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
all the progress so far has been over the last few months, unfortunately i can only work on it when i have spare time which is hard to come by at the mo. I have set myself a target of taking it to ford fair next year as im doing all the work myself except the paint job which a mate is doing for me

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
Cheers, it wasnt intended to go this far in depth at first but i got a bit carried away once i got started I'll post pics any updates as and when they happen but im only doing bits here and there when i have the time at the but im not rushing it so hopefully should be pretty nice when its finished Next step is to make & weld brackets in for to mount the rad, oil cooler and intercooler in as they are only placed in just to mock things up. I want to get this done pretty soon so that i can take the old engine and box out and push it into my mates spray booth next door for its respray, while thats being done i can get rebuilding the new engine

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
A few pics of a bit more progress ive had this weekend monting the radiator & oil cooler (unfinished in pics - did more adjustments & finishing touches + extra mounts after i took them) and what i thought would be a quick repair on the sunroof that turned into replacing much more than first intended

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
Next step is to get the old engine out and do a bit of seam welding around the engine bay and finish a few silly bits off. Then off to the body shop she can go

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
some great work there mate.
so your using the TT kit on what carb? R5 one?
question about roof, as it was that rotton, why not take a compete roof from scrap car, dill the spot welds and replace the complete skin rather than chop a section like you done?

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
No I haven't got a R5 carb, I've got the TT xr2 carb. I honestly didn't realise the roof was that bad, there was no bubbling or holes on the outside of roof skin but there was on the inside under the sunroof lip and I cut the sunroof out of a scrapper and just had enough of the other roof to replace the rusty section. I agree with what ur saying about replacing the complete roof and wish I did now but it was Sunday and I did the best I could with what I had. I may end up cutting it out and changing it now tho if I can find a decent one that isn't rusty too!

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
ah i see, no need to redo it if it doesnt need it though mate.
the TTxr2 carb, is just a standard xr2 carb, the conversion on the xr2's work well, but the R5 carb is a lot better so they say.
i only had a xr2TT for a short time, well i say "had" it wasnt mine, i done the conversion for a mate years ago and even with the xr2 stuff it was great fun and fast
i still have the xr2TT specs somewhere if your intrested in seeing them.
mind you, if your not running a dizzy then it prob isnt going to be much help to you

Never seen an F reg Mk3 before! Must be one of the first, I always thought the earliest Mk3's were on G reg plates.

Re: F393 RDL restoration project
Cheers, it's the first resto job I've done but been on the spanners for a bit I've only seen 2 1.6s mk3's on an F plate and I own both of them lol, have seen a couple of other mk3's on an F plate but yea they are very early so not many about. Interesting about the R5 carb - I'll look into that and yes I am running a dizzy too. The sunroof is completely rust free now and should look fine when fillered but if it don't look right then I'll replace it
