Fan temp switch problem.

Problem or technical question?

Fan temp switch problem.

Postby Brianscotty on Sat Apr 12, 2014 7:56 pm

Can someone tell me what temp the standard fan temp switch sends power to the fan? I ran the car up to temp with the gauge but the fan doesn't kick in. I've checked the power to the switch & bridged it to power the fan & that works fine. When it's connected to the temp switch the fan doesn't kick in. I really don't want to run the engine to long as I've no idea when thd fan should start.
Any help on this would be really appreciated.

Think its 90 odd degrees. If the temperature gets over half way there is a problem :)

What's the car/engine and how far up the gauge is it going?

Is it the FRST your profile says?

The temp gauge is going well above half way. I turn the engine off long before it gets too high.

The car is pretty much standard but has a different block & head from when I got it. The old block had 4 snapped head bolts & needed a rebore & the head needed the guides replaced. I managed to find a block with 1mm oversized Accrilites & ported & polished head.

I think I need to get a decent thermostat & find out what temp the old & new switches open.

Hmm, I don't know about on the turbos, but on the Zetecs they get to somewhere between the middle of 'O' and the bottom of 'N' before the fan kicks in.

As far as I know they kick in at around 90-95 degrees. Ford had issues with the plug, due to the high current the fan motor was drawing, it had the tendency to fry....I would suggest to install a relay to turn on and off the fan motor, and an uprated temp switch.I used a temperature switch from Motorsport developments, although I can't see it as available now. This is what I did and works flawless and much more powerfull, since the wirring is aged now and there is some voltage drop in the factory loom.Worst case scenario, use the Ford one and connect it to turn on and off a relay, which will turn on and off the fan. This will reduce the electric current that passes from the switch and frays the contacts.

Thats what i did, im now useing the standard system to power a relay with direct feed from the battery, much more power, i also have a brand new ford fan switch and that comes in between the red and the n, quiet normal for a turbo to get that hot, wlso have an override switch incase im stuck in bad traffic :)

An override switch is the best practice. You retain the factory settings characteristics, plus you can have extra control on the cooling capabilities. I don't know why Ford didn't use a relay for controlling the fan, I guess for cost reasons, but if they did a lot of problems could have been avoided...

As said already the plug to the switch and burn out, and more ofton than not people pull the plug off via the wire and this causes internal breaks to the wire, but when removed and bent slightly to be bridged it works but once clipped back on in the normal position the contact is lost.
Ford do, or did sell this plug but it's silly money! Best bet is take a trip to scrappy and rob a few and replace it.

Other than that the switch it self is dead, temp tage I'm not sure but it should be orange in colour for the Frst, anything else, say green for example is a higher temp rating switch
