FAO People with a 4x4 front brake upgrade

Postby J Brown on Sat Mar 29, 2003 10:21 am

I got my 4x4 callipers today and are now a bit concerned as to the size of them. They are HUGE. I was told you need a minimum of 15" wheels which is what I have got but they look to big to fit.

What I am asking is, has anyone done this brake upgrade with 15" wheels? and did they have any problems?

Any info would be great as I dont want to change the brakes and find my wheels don't fit.

Thanks
Joe

They fit behind most 15s (just!)

What I would do is unbolt your existing caliper and disc, but leave the brake pipe connected, then trial fit the new ones and put the wheel back on.

If they fit then you can carry on, if they don't you can just bolt the existing stuff back on as you've not undone the pipes and won't need to bleed them or anything.

yes adrians right m8, hang the fiesta caliper up on the shock leg with string or something, thats what i did to test if my setup would go on, put the cossie disk on, then put the caliper on, doesn't have to be tight as its coming back off, put the wheel on and check the distance between the caliper and the inside of the wheel, also turn the wheel to make sure your wheel weights don't hit the caliper, i have about 2-3mm clearance :D

Thanks for the replies.

I have my eye on a set of 16's at the moment so this could be the excuse I need.

Hopefully they do fit though as They look pretty cool behind 15" wheels.

Cheers

Cheers m8, no you don't have to upgrade the master cylinder, once the brake pads have bedded in the differnce is incredible, i would have thought they would fit behind venoms as they are dished out more than my wheels so, you should be okay.

I have them on my FRST with 15" Escort GTI wheels. They fit, but need spacing outward using 5mm spacer to clear them.

Obviously this dosn't mean its required on all 15" alloys.

YOU HAVE TO SPACE THE CALIPERS OUT 5mm TO CLEAR THE DISKS ON ANY FIESTA!! otherwise they wont fit!

Buff, imho it's worth a go - 4 pots on them, but more complicated to bleed if you do manage to get them on. Try Mondy discs with those calipers and see how far out everything is.

Try the rs owners message board. Thats where I got mine. Cost me £120 inc p+p though. You may be lucky to find people breaking either a sapphire 4x4 or an escort cosworth(not very likely though) The guy I bought mine from had just upgraded his to AP racing 6 pots so sold the old callipers.

Also look for companies in the back of performance ford and fast ford who are cosworth breakers/specialists.

Hope this gives you a few ideas

Thanks

Just for info the 2.9 V6 granada cosworth uses the same front calipers as the cossie 4X4 and the escort. There also a lot easier to find in the breakers yards :D

Got mine fitted now. No problems with clearance. Almost put myself through the windscreen when I brake now. Although i do have to apply a lot more pressure to the pedal in order for them to bite really well.

Anyone else have this problem?? I also put braided brake hoses on aswell but the pedal still seems quite soft.
Any ideas??

Cheers to everyone thats taken the time to answers ALL my questions. Most appreciated

you need to give the pads time to bed in, then you will only have to breath next to the pedal, and you will crap your pants.

Bleed your brakes ASAP it is dangerous!
This is assuming your getting a spongy feel in the pedal :-?

Run the pads in for 400 miles now and its still the same so it could be air then.

Whats the easiest way to bleed the brakes??

Just to say thanks to everyone that took the time to post to help me out.
Bought a brake bleeding kit from the local halfords and bled the brakes. and WOW what a difference.

you need to give the pads time to bed in, then you will only have to breath next to the pedal, and you will crap your pants.

 Can't believe how true that statement is.

Cost me £200 in total to change the front brakes and has got to be the best modification I have done.

Thanks again

16V_Si how difficult were these to fit? Do they need any spacing/machining or is this a bolt on?
