FAO Sphinx

You've just started to learn welding so take this as a warning mate

My welding mask is crap so stupidly thought it'd run a few quick welds by 'looking away'. Woke at 6am today my eyes streaming, got to A&E at 7am to confirm what I thought - I have Arc Eye

This can be very severe and even blind you. Its caused by looking at the arc (flash) created when welding. Symptoms are, weeping eyes that feel gritty and are blood shot - A damp towl will help them but you need to be checked out for further damage and I was given eye ointment.

Learn from my mistake

You can on the other hand get a good tan from it! You might be VERY red and sore for a while, but it does come up nicely

Decent ones still are about £200. Cheap ones tend to give the "double vision effect" meaning you see 2 arcs.

I need a new one. The sensors are dying :(

 Cheers for the warning.
Back in the first year of uni we did a bit of welding (about 5 minutes) and the guy did drum in the health and safety stuff so rest assured my auto-mask is near enough glued to my face when I'm anywhere near the welder 8)
