FAQ: Can you run Cosworth injectors on EEC-IV 0FAB or 0FAC?

Postby RS TURBO S2 on Mon Jul 26, 2004 10:38 pm

i know you cant just plug em in and xpect em to work, but can the ecu be modified (chipped or wotever) to take them?

just herd of a few poeple who say they are running yellows or 803's from a cossie on their festa turbo

is it the impedance that is different?
cant remember

anyway my tech question what is the next level up from biege injectors on a FRST using OFAB?

:aviator:

The Impedance is completely wrong mate, you need to match to impedance not just the resistance. This is not an easy matter though as the impedance of the injector will change over the frequency range.

i.e. Impedance(Z) = XL + XC + R

Where XL = 2.pie.f.L

and XC = 1/(2.pie.f.C)

therefore

Z = 1/(2.pie.f.C) + (2.pie.f.L) + R

At low engine revs, the inductance(L) of the injector controls the value of the impedance as the capacitance will be negigable BUT as the frequency(f) increases the inductance(L reduces and the capacitance(C) increases to a point where the capacitance will control the impedance. The resistance stays the same. The trick is to balance to characteristic L and C values with external Inductors and capacitors so that the impedance stays at the desired constant value throughout the operating frequency range (1000 to 7000 Hz).

Anyway, the only way you are going to be able to match the electrical characteristics of the cossy injector is to find out the Impedance (Z) of a cossy injector and compare it to the beige injector. The impedance is alway stated in the spec of the injector. Measure the resistance with a multimeter, this gives you R, look at the inductor/capacitor circuit inside the ECU, It will be a very simple T structure with the inductor in series and the capacitor in parallel. Using the formulae above, adjust the inductor and capacitor values until the cossy injector impedance is met. Then adjust the values slightly again until the impedance stays reasonably stable over the frequency range 1000 to 7000 rpm.

(Above info pinched from an earlier post, saved the info, but can't remember who put it on here to give them credit! Sorry)

Basically, I think, to use cossie injectors, you need to change management. :(

However there are some saab injectors with high flow rates, such as (bosch) 0-280-155-009, which are 16ohm impedance, and have a flow rate of 346cc/min.

Best thing to do, is change management, or research into different types of injector!

just herd of a few poeple who say they are running yellows or 803's from a cossie on their festa turbo - ARE THEY ON CRACK!?!

anyway my tech question what is the next level up from biege injectors on a FRST using OFAB? YES YOULL NEED OFAB MANAGMENT IF U WANNA AND POSSIBLY A 2.5 OR 3 BAR MAP SENSOR DEPENDING ON WHAT BOOST YOULL BE RUNNING.
NEXT STEP UP AFTER BEIGES IS INTERGRALE INJECTORS. OR I THINK BOSCH DO SOME HIGHER FLOWING ONES TOO.
AND YOULL NEED A LIVE MAP WITH ALL THIS

You want 16 ohhms anc above 240cc/min (flow rate for 701s)

From memory, there are some Audi Turbo ones which are the next suitable step up.

thanks for your replies, i cant remember where i have seen it but there was a mag feature and the guy reckoned he had cos 803's in his turbo and it was still on frst management using 3 bar map and there were lots of daft quotes like he shut down a 911 turbo on a track day down the straight and his m8s evo 46 cant keep up and he beats him off the light evry time

but there you go :bonkers:

nowt like a bit of pub talk to keep us thinking

also remember sumats on here or rsoc bb about bmw m3 (E30?) bosch injectors being the same as biege spec??

cheers

Yep, M3 ones are (or at least used to be) 701s.

I have been chatting with Stu MSD "passion ford owner" and he said that i can run small Turbo escort cossi injectors :D i have just myself a set from RSOC bb from some guy and will be putting them on my new engine

he said that the car would need a Map to setit up proply but i needed one anyway

hope that helps
