Fiesta Bonus - Zetec Turbo Update - Cooling update 31/7/13
Re: 2.0 ST170 Bonus -166bhp @ 6800rpm...
New engine spec for my St170 turbo.
Keeping my bottom end. It's already strong for the kind of power I want to run
I'm looking at two options for lowering compression
Skimming the pistons, more work as I will have to work out how much material needs taking off the top, £60
Or
Combustion chambers enlarged from 42cc to 46cc, combined with the 1.8mm Frs gasket to give me a decent compression ratio. £220
Reverting back to the standard exhaust cam as the bp285 is too hot, inlet is good tho!
Standard frs turbo and manifold - they are cheap and will go for a tubular manifold once funds permit
Standard focus inlet- fitted with a silver top mondeo tb, and the frs top elbow which holds the iat sensor. Will change this for a much better item once funds permit
Frs Chargecooler, fitted in place of the battery, and battery relocated to the boot. Location of charge cooler radiator to be confirmed
Before all this, I'm making a final trip to power engineering in its currant spec to see what power it makes up to the redline now

All sounds good to me, I think you'll end up close to 300 now once you've sorted manifolds etc I'd prefer the combustion chamber option purely on the grounds of safety

Re: 2.0 ST170 Bonus -Turbo spec revealed
Ryan, I still have the spare side-fed rover inlet if that's any help for you? Good enough for 300+ hp with (I think) 56mm tb. Has three take-offs on the post-tb inlet tract which makes life a little easier for connecting up. Rover uses a stepper for idle control so I doubt the tb will be much use. I was going to butcher it to make a larger capacity tapered inlet with venturi-type trumpets for the individual cylinder feeds - but that's a long way off now and I have a spare still attached to a head in any event.
RE exhaust cam, is it duration or lift that's the problem ? From what I recall some of the best gains on forced induction come from mild lift increase on inlet and "as much as you can get away with" duration increase on exhaust. I'm certain I'll be corrected if I'm wrong here
Also I seem to recall a recent conversation re forced induction where you cited lumpy idles and a whole load of other blah as reasons for not doing it (for which you will receive a small amount of ribbing).
Jon, what's the problem now ? You're really starting to sound like a petulant child who feels incessantly picked on (even though he's not); seriously, it's the Internet, just try to take it in good humour

Could be mega handy. Could you bring to lodge if not buried under crap etc
As for the cams, that was purely Ian Howells advise. He said the inlet would make a good turbo cam, and use a standard exhaust

Smo :What sort of compression ratio are you aiming for?
8.5:1
A focus rs is 8:1, and there are zetec turbos around running 9:1 but as I'm doing the initial mapping myself id rather give myself a bit of breathing space, and have a bit more responsive car off boost too

Fiesta Bonus - Preparation for Blacktop Turbo
A bit of a rambling with some pictures of where i am up to so far.....
Most importantly, the old engine is out and delivered to its new owner.
Pictures from today...
Before the engine came out I mocked up the rear alternator mounting bracket and checked where needed modifying to fit. The shaded are needs cutting back flush and reinforcing to give clearance for the tensioner. The rest of it will all fit fine as i previously removed the rear engine mounting bracket.
Aside from that, my brother has put his hand in his pocket to pay for a few bits for the car, so we now have the following.
Standard oil feed pipe
Top metal inlet elbow, hose, and seal. This bolts directly onto my existing 2.0 silvertop throttle body, which I'm fitting to a focus plastic inlet.
A focus rs fuel rail, injectors, bolted to a FRST fuel pressure regulator so that it can be adjusted.
I've also got a focus charge cooler, which im running with an AMG pump (very high flow), and using a fiat uno radiator to cool it down with, which im fitting in front of the standard radiator with a pair of suitable fans. Ideally get a focus rs charge cooler header tank to maintain the OEM look. The cooler itself will need the air inlets/outlets adjusted slightly, but will be going where the battery would normally. The battery is going in the boot instead.
All the parts for the fuel system are either in the garage or on order, i'l share pictures of those tomorrow.
The actual engine spec has been revised too. As I have sold the entire ST170 engine for good money, I'm buying an entire new blacktop engine as a base. I've also got a cracked focus rs head which is donating its valve springs etc to the new head, a set of FRS rods, which will get given a brand new set of frs pistons. The water pump inlet is going to be modified and have a silvertop inlet welded on instead at the correct angle so i can use standard hoses again. Standard breathers can be used as i've chosen a standard frs turbo and manifold, a simple oil return needs welding into the top of the sump.
Other than that a bit of wiring needs doing, ecu modifying to give boost control but that can be done any time after mapping to be honest. Im sure i've forgotten loads so i'l do another update tomorrow

Re: Fiesta Bonus - Preparation for Blacktop Turbo
Another small update....
The fuel system is ready to be fitted, just need a couple of grommets for the -8 and -10 hoses, and a bracket for the fuel pump.
Im using a escort turbo fuel filter, its massive and takes standard size fittings for the hose.
This is what £80 of fittings looks like from torques. Very good service and quality
Ive started to put the swirl pot etc together, and the ends on one end of the hoses.
And finally the FRS pistons were ordered, i've already fitted these to the FRS rods.
Enjoy

That's how they should be The colour identifies the thread type, or at least it should according to hose standards. Black is for tarts

Re: Fiesta Bonus - Zetec Turbo Update
I've still not looked for that inlet, must do that this week. Thought it was in our storeroom but I cleared it out a few days ago while hunting down some other car bits but didn't see it.
In case you're after a set, I found a set of ~480cc high-impedance top fed injectors the other day.

Re: Fiesta Bonus - Zetec Turbo Update
Pictures to follow, however I've just picked up the engine to receive the new internals from Mansfield.
It's a 4k miles from new blacktop with paperwork to confirm milage.
Tomorrow I will strip the unneeded bits, rods, pistons, exhaust valves, valve springs and substitute for rs items, and then check valve clearance on exhaust side. This time next week we will be looking at a freshly built engine

Re: Fiesta Bonus - Zetec Turbo Update
I've got the receipt for the new engine from Chester kit cars I think it is, car passed IVA late 2009, then removed to fit a st170 mid 2010, and sold on eBay January 2011, which the guy gave me the receipt for too, which matches the engine numbers too

Re: Fiesta Bonus - Zetec Turbo Update
Quite an update, i didn't realise it had been so long since my last one....
The head as it was removed
I then set about cleaning the exhaust valves. Im fitting focus rs valves but they needed a clean up first, so one by one i put them in a drill and cleaned them with a brass brush. They came out rather nice! I lapped these in afterwards and replaced all the valve springs with the focus rs version. You can see in the pictures that it is a much thicker coil.
This was then reshimmed on the exhaust side to get the clearances of the solid lifters correct because of changing the exhaust valves.
I also picked up this focus rs breather pot along the way for £5
Also this difficult to get hold of adaptor/gasket for fitting a metal throttle body to a plastic inlet manifold
On christmas eve i got pretty close to having the package ready to drop in, but disaster struck and i accidentally over-torqued the idler pulley and snapped the bolt. The left over bit of bolt came out the head fine but due to some confusion at ford, getting the right bolt to replace it wasnt an option, turns out it only comes with the pulley itself so i got a complete new INA pulley from eurocarparts for £15 This is how i finished up before xmas
After advise from Mark Stewart i've ordered a single piece inlet manifold instead of the 2 piece i have fitted. I should imagine it is far more susceptible to splitting under boost being a 2 piece.
Then today this happened
All i need now is some moly lube to put the arp rod bolts back in, modify the sump for oil return and bolt it on

Firstly for waynes referance, this is how the turbo oil feed runs when using a focus rs turbo. You can get a braided line but a genuine for item is prob easier!
You will need this adapter that goes into the back of the block to be able to use a standard banjo/fitting, i'l put a link up for the ford item in a second....
The oil pressure switch resumes its original position
And for my actual update, i got the sump back today, a threaded barb fitting has been fitted to the sump, and its position means i can just bend a piece of oil resistant hose from the turbo outlet to the sump return, which completely clears the brand new toyosport £40 delivered downpipe/decat. Bargain!
