Re: 2ltr Bonus - update 26/04/2009
Loom was a headache until i found i'd left an earth off! Tomorrow will see it starting hopefully, loads more wiring left to do, alarm, stereo, alternator and speed shift. A good couple of afternoons!

gearknob was valuable before the "gate marker mod", god only knows what its worth now. I may keep it for shows only tbh.

I was going to say, after seeing the manifold photo, that some things are looking quite tidy. But by the end, No.
In regards to the cambelt, on my engine, somethings bashed the s**t out of the cambelt cover so I'm guessing it was also running quite good to 'the bit where the mount goes'

~kenny powers~ :Also the cambelt is super close to the inner wing bit where the mount bolts to, like 5mm, anyone else have the issue? It doesn't look like a issue to cut the lip out for clearance to me, but not heard of anyone else doing this. I wonder if its to do with the mount?
This is the only photo I can find from when I was doing mine:
Probably not toooo clear in the pic, but I will admit, it's very close and it's a pain when trying to remove the middle cambelt cover - it's only just about do-able...
I assume it's the reason that the 16v shells didn't have the extra bit of metal that all the non-16v shells do and why the Zetec mount was designed to bolt up about an inch further back than the HCS and CVH mounts do.

Love this thread, it's great to see another car being built with such attention to detail.
BTW my pink knob is only on loan, but thanks for the modification, I reckon its probly doubled in value

If you look at my build pics you'll see mine has been ground down quite a bit and then re-welded.

you think the manifold looks tidy? its ok, but the top is not so good, was hard to wrap cos its bumpy
I am going to just dremel the top of the inner wing bit on mine, for peace of mind.

Re: 2ltr Bonus - update 26/04/2009
Right update time. Done a few bits this week.
After plenty of head scratching it now starts and runs. We thought the ecu was duff but it turned out to be some wiring mumbo jumbo that I don't understand. It seems to run pretty well, but is leaking oil from the crank seal. Hopefully we can sort it easily enough. Need to get the maf / filter and exhaust connected up too, and source a servo vac pipe.
The engine mount issue is now sorted, we managed to get hold of a SI mount and drilled the car to suit it, just involves drilling a hole further back, same as the 3.5s have. Sadly the first hole was a bit out so we had to enlongate it a bit, together with the now unneeded cutting of the panel. I am pretty annoyed about how it looks but tbh it don't really matter, will weld it up at some point, and paint it blue at least!
The most important thing is that the engine now sits right and has clearance for the water hose.
I also started sorting the air filter, have a few old cone filters kicking about, I used the one with the biggest inlet hole I could find, its rather battered and nasty but it will do the trick.
I need to sort something to connect the throttle body to the maf. I was thinking of flexible ducking but I can't find any in the right size locally.
Once I sort that bit then should have the filter done by the gearbox.

Re: 2ltr Bonus - update 07/05/2009
started fitting the interior today, need to get some bolts for the rear bench tomorrow thou.
Does anyone know if the carpet is cut for the centre console brackets on cars that have one? I don't think it is, but Brian said it might be. Also are the holes for the brackets there on all shells or are they just self tapped?
Brian sorted the oil leak from the crank seal out, by replacing the crank seal funnily enough,, fair play to him, top job done surprisingly fast. Previous owner was clearly a gimp when he fitted that!
He also wired up the mk4 clocks, so they are ready to go once I make a little cut in the dash.
Picture update tomorrow, hopefully with brakes and suspension sorted, and the front seats in and bench bolted up. Still waiting on a couple of alarm bits before dash goes in.

Good progress homos
Carpets are deffo cut for centre console bracket, and its just self tappers that hold it in.
it enables you to remove the carpet without having to take the bracket out
I'm assuming this heap will be at FITP next week

Re: 2ltr Bonus - update 07/05/2009
some more done on this on the weekend, and a little bit today.
The airfilter is piped up now, using ducting so its right by the gearbox. Its not the best looking way of doing it, but is a nice wide bore so its the same all the way through, and does look better than a random erst or frst crossover, they look gash on n/a cars without fail!
Got some bits from the scrappy to fit centre console, so thats in now, along with the full interior other than the dash.
Alternator is now fitted, belt needs fitting still.
Brian has started fitting the alarm.
Gearlinkage fitted.
Launch control / speed shift is wired in, hopefully its correct!
Mk4 clocks are wired upo and working, I think f**cked up cutting the dash, so goona get one this week then interior is done.

When I did my mk4 clocks I had to hack out loads but none of it was visible. They were wedged in and never screwed in I don't think!

the bonnet will close yeah.
the clocks only actually need a small bit of dash chopping and a bit on top and bottom of the clocks, i cut way too much out the dash i have since found out. The top screws in if you make a bracket up and bottom wedges.

Nice to see a rot free floor, always find it funny when people plough loads of money into a car,
only for it to fail its MOT because the seats are falling through the floor

The floor seems to be rot free, and the sills are pretty good. it has a hole under one of the wings, just before where it meets the sill, and the front valance is scabby, although not holed. Filler cap area is rusty as normal. Happily this is the type of car where none of that matters, as long as its solid. And also, we have ploughed about £3.50 into this one lmfao.

Re: 2ltr Bonus - picture update tuesday 12/05/2009
Brian near enough finished alarm tonight, just need to wire a couple bits in. Remote start is working now, and water pipes are all plumbed in, need to get one of the matrix hoses tomorrow thou, one on car is too short. Off to scrappy for a dash and alternator wiring tomorrow too.
Ran it up a bit tonight, its surprising not that loud given it has no exhaust from the manifold back. Its idling well and seems to rev pretty well. I revved it abit from the throttle body, and it "feels" like its gonna pull hard. I know thats nonsense but mah. lol.
This car is very close, not close enough for FITP sadly, but close.
