i had it running 20 mins previous to the vid to bleed coolant through.
new thermostat opened and fan came on before vid as well.

just need to connect up clutch cable to gearbox and tighten up hub nuts then i can give it a test drive

Mk2 is taxed & Insured :D

I completed a 5 mile road test today with the new engine. It does seem to idle quite high @ 1500 rpm. When i cruise along at 40mph in 5th gear i can take my foot off the accelerator pedal and the car will virtually drive its self. The throttle cable is fully adjusted toward the throttle body & the throttle body itself is fully closed so there is no way i can adjust this idle.

On the flip side. This blacktop engine doesnt stall when i come to a stop at traffic lights. The silvertop i removed always used to want to stall when the revs dropped below 1000rpm. So im glad about that.

The car is booked into top gear exhaust center in st albans next wednesday. Im praying they can squeeze the st170 manifold on this so i can get a bit more poke out of it.

Glad to hear its back on the road. Shame about the idle though, but as Jony said, could be a sensor.

Hope you get it sorted, and will be looking forward to seeing if you can get the ST170 manifold on there :D

Good to see its running :aviator: I'm sure top gear will be able to sort the maniold out. They did some work on my old RS1800 as well as my friends mk2 and XR3i. They're a friendly bunch of guys in there, which makes a change from most garages.

nice mate, a good turn around time too.

although, i think you should still be cautious mate.

after all, its eatend 2 silver top engines in a short space of time, i know both may of had there own propblems before they went in the mk2, but the fact is, your still using the same inlet and fuel set up now, as well as ecu (unless your MS one is ready and fitted??) as you have done on the last 2 engines...... as ive said in the past, if theres a fault with something there that caused, or contributed to the past engines failing, then you dont want it happening a 3rd time.

so dont go booting it about untill you have had it checked and set up right, other wise you could end up wanting a new engine again...

Ive finally got to the bottom of my idle issues ! :D
The inlet manifold had the incorrect gasket fitted. When i bought the HO inlet the 2.0 throttle body came modified and already fitted so i never took it apart. After getting some good advice i found the vacuum leak by spraying brake cleaner around the inlet which changed the note of the idle. The gasket i took off is a metal tin gasket from a 2.0 mondeo inlet manifold. The HO inlet uses a paper gasket. Fitted that today and it cured the high idle.

Car now purrs just above 1000rpm
Happy days :bonkers:

Idle is the speed the engine sits at whilst not under load. Therefore, it could be anything!

Well bear in mind the engine is wired up to a very old mk2 rev counter which gets its feed from the alternator wiring. So it could be even lower 1000 in reality.
Either way its still a breakthru compared to the 1500 it was static at .

Gave it a run to the petrol station today.
For the 1st time since ive done the 2.0 conversion it finally runs perfectly.
Finding that vac leak must of been playing havoc with the 2 previous engines as well.

lastly id would like to point out that having a brand new engine makes alot of difference power wise. I have noticed a massive difference :P

Another new purchase today - went down burton power and got myself matching racetech guages.
Oil temp , oil pressure & volt meter

Image

Before ......

Image

After :D

Image
Image

I went for the black guages to match the mk2 instruments. Both the oil guages are electric so will require senders to be plumbed into the engine. I didnt want to run oil pipes inside the car incase i was to spring a leak. Oil temp is going to be plumbed in using a sump plug adaptor. Oil pressure is going to have a T-piece from the block for the sender & oil pressure switch to go into.
Radio is being relocated to the glove box for now.

I dont want a nice new cd player on show in the car, so relocating it solves this issue and creates the space for the guages

Exactly why i didnt want to mess with the vents. Guages would look odd down there
Plus they are level with the rest of the instruments which means i dont need to take my eyes off the road by looking down to see them. :bonkers:
