Adjustable rear beam

Postby Pd on Thu Jan 06, 2005 6:16 pm

turboboss...

I am very interested to see how the rear beam is made adjustable??
Have you any pics??
I have got a zetec-s rear beam to go on2 my fiesta, which i have been told makes a lot of difference to the handling .... but to make it adjustable... sounds even better!!!

is the zetec s setup the same as the puma set up?

when i had my fiesta rst about 2 years ago people were on about switching the frst rear beam etc for the puma one, as this improved the overall handling, however i never had it done so cant comment personally.

I find that my turbo handles better than my si. My turbo is standard and holds quite well untill high speed. the si is on a 60 drop and its all over the place. i might end up putting the rear end lower on it so it is more like the turbos. i read an old old old rally sport news mag and when they researched to build the turbo they lowered the rear and made the dampers stiffer so obviously they saw a problem there. All after market suspension kits loose that thought and i find that the front always goes lower than the rear.

How do you have yours??

what suspension are you using?

depends on how you propose to do it, you could end up just make it worse

I find like sunil that when driving a little harsher into corners the back
snaps and lifts. It also makes an annoying knocking noise which to this day
my local 'fraud' dealership does not know what it is.

Been looking into Z-S rear beam as to have bolt on rear disc. how hard
would this be to do.

my rear beam has a strip set half way inside the V shaped bit, and poly bushes and a FRST ARB which has had added mounting points in the middle of beam as when as on the sides.

perfect balance of stiffness and handling

Got a strut brace on the back of mine and it really stiffens it all up. You can feel it working even in slow corners and when the back end starts to drift it's sooooo much more predictable and controllable.

A very good £35 spent there!

Anybody any thoughts on this I might even get round to making a couple of sets to sell (made to order).

HOLY CRAP!!

I put some unused Goodyear NCT2's on the back last night and on the dry they are beautiful!! Damp round abouts are another matter, however highly entertaining. Dont think I have ever has a car so sideways and managed to catch it. I love my Fiesta

Long time no see, hows things mate. Sounds like your motor is coming along , do you ever stop modding it lol. Will have to have a look at your new setup when i next see ya around. Ive got a little engineering place in Taplow by the Sainsburys working on my adjustable lower arms at the min. Im not going as far as adjustable rear though.

Im getting an exhaust made up at simpson racing eventually aswell , went down there for them to sort out my de-cat and there work is proper (insert ghey rap term) so im gonna ditch the magnex for one of there systems. Aint had mine mapped yet, still gotta a few thigns to do first like the exhuast and i want a new inlet mainfold aswell. Whats up with your quaife diff?? i bought a stg2 from Bernie a few months ago. Aint done no track days or RWYB yet but i did do a grudge match with Performance Ford a couple of weeks ago (http://www.fiestaturbo.com/phpBB/viewto ... highlight=). Will be in the March issue, managed to get to 60 in the 6's and 15 sec qtrs in the damp. cant wait to get it mapped and run it on a dry day with me adjustable lower arms. Reckon it will be in 14's easily. Saw your feature in Performance Ford not so long ago. aswell , well done. You got any parts for sale that i might be interested in? you must have loads of spares the amount times you've changed things round you nutter

cant say i have really had a problem with my handling, its slipps a littl and its come out a few time's, but have to say my mk2 XR2 handled better as standard.
got avos on now but not really given it much yet, would agree that the back beam is a bit flimsy and could do with being a little tighter

They should have come with an indepentant reap suspension set up. or an Xr2 style rear beam.

Ive got a few ideas in my head that i would like to try but i dont have a spare beam or the kit to have a play. Basically a steady bar from the centre of the axle to the lower shocker mounts. Would be pretty much a fixed bar one to each side. Could be adapted from a xr2 rear tie bar (cant [ERRR] of the proper name. Hard to make you see the pic but i think that it would minimise twist in the axle. Also my mate are into R5gt and they run the front end lower than the rear and say that thats the best set up for handling. And they use a similar torsion axle to a point. Il try and make up a pic of my idea.

i haven't tried my new rear ream out yet but my rs handled brill before with koni's and 15'' rims it was a great handling car so now with my zetec s beam and focus disc set up the hanlding [ERRR] be top notch :D ...

i think trying to fiddle with more camber and stuff on the rear is goin a bit OTT well for me anyway, its each to there own but i'm quite happy just slapping a stiffer beam and wider track on rather than experimenting with stuff :bonkers:

Ian get on passionford and have a word with a user called MEF, he does suspension kits to change the rear fo an escort so it can run coilovers so im sure he can sort something out for you or give you an idea at least as its not as easy as fitting coilovers on the rear fo a fiesta so he knows a thing or two

at least worth a try

I've been doing calculations all morning concerning roll stiffness, weight transfer etc, and just found this thread. My car used to be pants, so on went the 2i wheels with 185/60/13 tyres, which made it sharper. Then came the 195/45/15 wheels/tyres, front anti-roll bar and Gmax suspension, and a fast run on the twisty roads didn't give me one moment of understeer, nor end rear end action.

I drive my car pretty damn hard on wiggly roads and the back end hasn't been a problem once. The Metro loses the back sometimes, but never the Fiesta. The front end goes before the rear.

Like I say, I've been doing quite a bit on roll stiffness and weight trasnfer recently, and going through the calculations shows up a lot of factual information which throws your old beliefs out of the window. In short, I would formerly have thought "My car's understeering, so I need to put a stiffer anti-roll bar on to stop it rolling and sliding". The truth it, the front needs softening in relation to the rear, which could be accomplished by reducing the roll stiffness, increasing the rear stiffness, or a combination of the two.

That said, increasing the roll stiffness at the rear would seem to be the best option, as the front end certainly doesn't need to be any softer on my own setup. The roll's not bad on mine, being a little stiffer would be good. Increasing roll stiffness doesn't alter the load transfer in lateral acceleration, only the rate of load transfer. This would result in sharper turn-in and less body roll.

Increasing the rear roll stiffness would shift the load transfer towards the rear of the car, putting more weight on the tyres and giving more grip, taking away a little from the front.

To model the car's roll characteristics would be a damn hard thing to do, and would be the way to calculate exactly how much needed doing to the back of the car to get a fairly neutral setup. Roll centres would be reasonably easy to calculate, but the sprung centre of gravity would not be as easy.

Long story short, after all this babble, is that "suck and see" with rear beam stiffening would appear to be the best way to get the handling you want! I've babbled on above to discuss the true reasoning behind stiffening the back of the car up, and the welded webs appear to be a pretty good way to do it, and much easier than a full beam transplant!a

cant believe i just reas all that :P

cheers james im sure people will fine that interesting, i have no interest in me fez at mo tho

as for the adding webs to a beam as apposed to a swap, most people would probably end up removing the beam to get it welded, and so little advantage if any, i would much prefer the ZS beam to a welded mk3, mean reason is the redesign of the mount between hub and beam, which to mean is a lot stronger and better design

I would swap straight to the ZS beam if it didn't mean shunting the rear track out to an arch-interferring width, which is why I'll be welding a FRST beam when I attack that part of the car. A guy came round to look at the Fiesta yesterday to price up a respray and a couple of bits...£1500 + VAT

Ian - I bet you lose interest in yours quite a bit, you are certainly going for the in-depth stuff rather than just making it run and driving it. It'll take you longer, but be more satisfying in the end :) This weather hardly encourages you to work...I've just come outside now to spend the last two or three hours on mine before I have to go back to uni and it's snow, and -1 degrees C  Gotta keep cracking away though, it's been great just to see it again after so long :D
