Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration...FINISHED ITEM CONCOURSE PICS.

Postby RS EDDIE on Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:46 am

HERE WE GO!!!
As a few are aware ive just started a thread on passionford, on my resto to my merc grey frst. Il post the same thread on ere as i go, so none of ya miss out!!!

Firstly a bit about the car as mentioned previously!!!

Im currently in the process of restoring my FRST. Ive had the car now for nudging on 14 years. The car, as youll see in the pics didnt really need this much doing to it, no rust at all as far as i hoped...but..Im a bit anal, and as there were a few paint chips and the odd bit of flaking i thought sod it, its now or never.

The car has had 2 previous owners, the first for 6 months, who traded her in for a new 4x4 Saph, and the second who was an elderly gent who bought the car in part exchange for his fiesta xr2i, as a retirement present for himself and wife!!! Both the previous keepers were contacted before i purchased the car as peace of mind!!

Its currently got 73,000 miles with every mot, bill of sale and any correspondance from fords to the owners. Ive personally maintained the servicing of her with regular oil changes etc, as when i purchased her the servicing book was full of stamps up to the 90 odd thousand point, but the car was still showing the original 46,970 miles. Shes totally standard, apart from the odd set of wheels and exhausts being fitted over the years.

The car has never been raced, thrashed or abused in its life, and all the previous owners names and adresses have been kept, inc dealer plates, tax disk holder and key fobs!!

Hope you all enjoy my first attempt at my restoration, bear with me as il be updating the pics in the next few days or so!!!

Last years pics!!

Wouldnt consider it a shame its on a jig...Its amazing when the original ford underseal is off, just how much of it is storing dormant moisture just gradually gnawing its way through into the metal, as my pics will show.
Its only very slight surface rust, but left alone im sure its the type of stuff that would eventually cause alot of grief in years to come, so time to take it all off!!! :D

Been in touch with a good company Oop North who is gna supply me with rubberised texured O>E underseal, which im gnaput over all the rust traeted areas, then overpaint in mercury, and then laquer.

Right lets get back in the garage, in the warm, on this wet windy day!!!! :Q

Before you had even started it was one of the best out there, once finished it will be stunning,

Roll over spits are the only way to go when restoring, makes the work so much easier.

Hurry and get some more pictures up please,

True, rollovers are pukka. Its soooo much easier to take everything off, and clean, and just standing up with a wire brush and drill etc, enables me to have a nice fag, and a brew whilst standing back and admiring my handywork!!!

Thanks for the comments, a few more pics will be up as of later or tommorrow!!!! :D :D

Yea i was gna get it painted there, for £1500-2000, depending on what they have to take off etc.

It will be in skeleton frame form, so there will be no work taking everything off so they can get into everywhere with the spray gun etc....BUT....Ive been told at work to take it to a place in Kent as he is a friend of a friend and is EXTREMELY anal which suits me fine. :D

The only problem will be getting the car there by transporter etc, but il see nearer the time!! :)

Too busy a the min trying to get a welder and compressor so itl be a good few weeks yet!!! :Q

Started to dismantle the front end etc...I wont bore ya with me taking the front bumper off and obvious bits and pieces etc!!!
Here is the bulkhead pannelling coming off.

A good few years of leafage and dust here!!!

So out came the heater box and surrounding elements!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Was very happy as there was no rust or anything, just needed a polish up for the time being!! :D

Then i had to take out the wiper moter and linkages etc, as they were a bit manky, so il get brand new ones.

Image

Image

A few more odds and sods pics in no particular order, namely the front end. I looked over the turbo and exhaust for any signs of oil seepage, to which there was none and all was dry :Q

Few more later tonight after my grub....Enjoy!!! :D

Shocking Battery tray!!!

Image

Now Gone!!! :)

Image

Loom taped up and labelled

Image

Image

Oh Yea, forgot....The engine came out first!!! :D

Image

Image

Image

Came out fairly easily with the aid of a nate in his Janitors jacket!!!

Image

Image

Sump out for a little peek, before the engine went off to Burton Performance for a new head and cam, as the original cam had done 73k, and was a teeny bit loud!!

Image

The next step was to get the car into position, clear the garage out, have a tidy up, ready for my rollover jig to take charge of the operations!!!! :o :o

Awesome progression Eddie. How does the battery tray come out? Mine needs taking out and spraying up. Are they welded in place? If they are I will have to do my best and spray it where it is.

Yea mate the bracket is spot welded to the chassis and also to the tray, (if you wanted to take the bracket out aswell), I left mine in, but i might take the whole lot out as its easier now, as youll see when its rolled over!!!! :Q

Re: Ok here goes the resto!!!!!!!

Postby RS EDDIE on Wed Mar 02, 2011 11:39 pm

Right Here a few of the car starting off on the jig, now that the engine was out. The rear was easily lifted by the two of us with the front on axle stands. We attached the jig in the correct places, and bolted into position, being carefull not to bend the jig by the front being lower, so we set it to the lowest position to start with!!! :Q

Image

Image

We then had to use an engine crane tied to to the front chassis to lift the front obviously. The major problem was siting the engine crane inbetween the front legs of the jig, so we could slide it into position without knocking the rear one out of place and lifting the front off centre....GRIEF!!!!! :x I had literally 5" to play with!!!

Image

After i was sure that it was all tight and level, we started to roll the shell. Believe you me, it was fuuking nerve wracking, one mistake assembling it and the car would have fallen off and bent the whole chassis. As we moved the car, i had literally 2ft clearance from the wall, so if it had of hit the wall, it would have meant, taking it all apart , assembling the shocks, wishbones wheels and all the moving bits, then re-postioining the car and doing it all again, so luckily, i got it bang on first time!!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now that was rolled a bit slow, and i can tell ya, when a few nuts and bolts left on the floor decide to roll across the floor to the other side its as tho the car sounds like its about to fall off the jig. After a few turns tho, i got a bit cocky and nearly let it roll all the way over onto its roof, but grabbed it in time!!! :o

Forgot to mention, the rollover pics are in no order, so if you see different shades on the underneath then its because ive taken them as i went and prob got them muddled up....Pics of the underneath tho will follow v. soon!!! :D
