Did you heat 5th up before pulling?

Reason i ask is i had that puller an it wouldnt touch my 5th gear :-? ..it couldnt get a good enough grip under it with the legs... :(

Cheers Mark!!

A massive...Bog standard set up, with a nice kent cvh34 cam and new head.

Gen ford followers, ( dumping the Kent ones,) Ford oil pump, head bolts, head gasket, cam belt.

Polished crank if needed and rebalanced, re-lapped valves. ARP bottom end bolts with new shims.

Nothing major as the orig lump had v.good comp across all four (all the same reading). Dont wanna change too much as its only a show car for the next few years etc. :D

Fraggle...No i didnt need to heat 5th gear as it was off a few weeks ago. Was on extremely tight tho, but the puller piiiissed it. You will have to heat when putting back on as it expands the metal making it slot on easier ( as mark suggested when we did mine!!) :D

Fraggle - You will need the correct puller to get an original/well used gear off, but if it's been off recently like Eddie's has then the standard type one will work.

Sykes-Pickavant used to do them but I believe they are now discontinued, I couldn't ever find one anyway. In the end I ended up making one from a piece of box section, some plate, and a very large bolt and washers.

Re-did the gearbox, but there was a problem. The 5th gear bearing had moved up the shaft so when it was back together the cog wouldnt slide down the shaft enough for the circlip...so its now apart again awaiting new gasgets!!!

Anyway tiny update...While the car is at the painters ive been bored, so decided to refurb the alternator and starter motor with new-ish stickers and palstic covers!!

Image

Image

Nice eh!!! :D ...But before ya say it....Yes i have the wrong sticker on one of em, cant find the correct one atm, but its somewhere!!!!

(oh yeah and i bought new front indicators, new sides and new rears but ya know what they look like)

I put graphics cards in my oven at 190c for 8 minutes without issue, I'm sure a starter motor can take a little more!

Serious stuff.

Except the guy who put it in a microwave oven and wondered why it sparked.

Went to the painters today to check on progress. Very pleased with the fabricating and prepping. The pics are only the first stages of the painting etc.

Image

Image

Front panel baremetalled, treated and primed in first coat.

Image

Very minor dents awaiting to be knocked back. ( these were soooo slight it was hard to see them before, but hes gna knock it right back...

Image

Rear arch around the filler cap awaiting the final stages of knocking back before etch primer etc...

Image

Image

Image

A few of the tailgate at the first stage of prep...

Image

Image

Drivers side door.. (The denting was heated out to pinch the metal tight again then a first stage of prep added)...

Image

Image

The classic rot area on a mk3...new metal is going in rather than messing around with bad metal...

Image

And the bonnet. This was very wobbly in my eyes, when i luckily bought a very rust free one. Again, rather than bang dents in and fill, the prepper has managed to stress heat all of the denting (including the inlet denting it had made) and strengthen the metal so its gone back totally flat again. He then bare-metalled the top and acid etch primed it as a first stage of prep to keep any moisture away from it before priming. :Q

Image

Image

Image

Overall, im extremely pleased with waht hes done. He knows his stuff and is very good. Hes not happy with anything that he feels will affect the overall finish of the paint, so thats a bonus.... :D :D

Ill update as i go, Next monday im back down there with the camera to get more pics!!!!
