Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Small update..AGAIN
Right, been to painters this a.m to get an update. The work that the prepper is doing is second to none!!!. Where i had previously had deadlocks inside the doors and shuts, hes manged to fabricate the metal and weld new pieces in rather than fill holes.
Hes in the process of finishing the rear panel work and offering up the kit so it fits nice and tight to the body with no gaps etc. The two front wings have been prepped for primer and the door shuts and hangers also smoothed off ready for seam sealer and final prime. Looks pukka.
Welded in metal to replace deadlock holes i had previous...
Front wings with bodykit offered up for fitment....
Rear panels nearly there, just gotta get the shaping bang on then final prime...
Inside pass side door shut...
Side on view as it is atm...
Had a good ol chinwag with the painter who was taliking me through how he goes about the painting etc.
Hes gonna place the car in the oven before the final paint for a few hours. This is to stop any moisture getting under the paint before the spray work, and causing any moisture pickling.
Heres a few of the cars that are going in this week ahead of mine for a few jobs that other paint shops did badly....
Again all comments, good or bad welcomed!!!

Cheers pal.
At this rate tho, looks as tho Ford Fair will be the show it makes. Ive been concentrating on refurbing the garage with new carpet, painted walls and getting rid of the severe damp it had over the last few years!! 90% finished now so at least it will be warm and dry this winter!!!

Sound
Although from personal exp mate we always used to Oven em before/and then during priming aswell.
99% of time all the priming was done in booth while on suitable temp, then mostly flashed off between coats/flats as and if necessary...
Sadly in the old MD bodyshops its all bonus so time is money
But on anything "personal or PJ related" Time was not an issue, so only pure quality was to be done
Any flatting was then done outside booth before being propper blown down, pushed back in(again still warm) then seriously panel wiped, followed by stat&ragged, before next stage..and so on, we could clean as many times as we wanted when doing percie jobs
Cleanliness is next to as they say...so no badboy currie's the night before visiting the booth for piccies on prime/paint day bud, "one drip and it turns to s**t" as my boss used to say.
shame i forgot to remember that motto b4 ive had any of my 5min joys with me misses over all the moons that have passed
Anyway's looking superb Edd, FF is a hard deadline to set...so many questions i wanna ask you but i'll clog your thread like a pub u-bend so i'll space em out over the weekend

Out of interest, why so much filler on the rear passenger side panel? Door dinks etc?

Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Paint stage 3...
Dave, its got that much filler on it so it doesnt localise the dents and panel wobbles that were there. What he does is spread the filler across the panel so that where the dents were, rather than localise the filler over just the dent it stretches the area to be knocked back. This gets rid of filler localisation, in other words you get rid of any edges of filler around a small area and spreads it across a larger area. It then blends in better. ( if that makes sense)
On a different note....Heres a few of my alloy wheel refurbing attempt!!! Ive got a show set already but if these turn out better then ill use these. After an everyday set out of the 2 sets,to use rather than steels!!
First 3 stages from R to L....(R) Shot blasted, (Middle) primed then in an oven, (L)then high build primer into the oven before fourth stage of grey primer and oven again!!!
Shotblasted...
Oven Primed...
High build primed...
Then into oven to cure again before final grey prime...

Like most things there's always a few different ways to do things.I was suprised to see all that filler but can't comment because I havnt seen it in the flesh, any imperfections etc.
I know people who are s**t hot fillers and can fill full panels and get them so there are no ripples when finished. The primer looks to be going on pretty thick Eddie so should cover the filler well.
Will probably go to Ford Fair just to see this lol, don't usually go!
Looking good Eddie
Matt

Cheers Lads..
The primer is going to be knocked back yet so hold ya horses.... It will be flat as a pancake hopefully, its only in the early stages before prep and blocking back......SO BARE WITH ME
If anyone wants to come over and pick it to bits then let me know and ill willingly go around the car with them.
Hopefully it will be with me at Ford Fair, so make your opinions known to me on the day and ill take it on board and then i can make it better...

Yep give it a good flatting and it'll be spot on,winds me up at previous places I've worked when some painters use thin primers so it's easier for them to rub down!grrrrr.

Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Paint stage 3...
Not alot has happened top the car since my last update. Theres a few areas that have been skimmed more ready to be knocked 100% flat so there are no sunken localised filler areas.
Heres a few extra ones i took....
If you look to the far right on this panel (the two patches of primer), this is roughly the level that tall the panel filler will be taken back to before primer.
Sunroof wobbles now nearly sorted...
Tailgate before filler and flatting back, primer etc...
He wants to get the re-studded bodykit bang on flush with the panels so that he can 3m tape it aswell as the nuts. I DO NOT want the kit forced onto the car with clamps and tiger seal incase it ever needs to be taken off because of damage etc, and he agrees that is a lazy way of getting the kit to fit correctly, so no-no from that side of things!!!
Thats it for the moment. The owner reckons around 3 weeks till final heating to remove moisture, blowing all the dust off the whole car and insides, then prep then paint, then final polish!!!!

Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Paint stage 4...
Cheers Fellas... Dave thats not an oven.....Its a paint curing cube!!!
Yeah i have seen it Jay. Theres an easier way to do it which i have done. I lit the rusted old threaded dowels with a lighter, until it heated the donut shaped housing. This enabled me to twist and pull the whole item including the base out of the donut leaving it as it was when new.
After getting a similar zinc plated flanged threaded dowel, i put a hardening epoxy resin into the donut recess, then angle fitted the new threaded post tight with pliars into the donut and epoxy. Lastly i smeared the top of the donut with the same epoxy resin until rock hard.
Tested it with the pliars and it aint going anywhere now!!! Should do the trick!!! It did last time....Ive had to grind one of the epoxyd dowels out of a mates kit previously!!!!

Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Paint stage 4...
nice one mate, good to hear you found a easier way.
i did try something like that when i done it, well, trying to get the old bits out without damaging the plastic around it, it was a bit hit and miss, some would tear, some wouldnt.
didnt try heating them though, although i thought of it, but feared it would damage the plastic too much, guess i was wrong, so good call mate

Re: Fiesta RS Turbo Restoration....Paint stage 4...
Right, went to the painters today just to get an update....Took loads of pics which i have managed to delete by mistake!!!
Anyway, the d.side rear is in first coat of thick primer ready for knocking back, and then the rest of the car can be done. Hes gonna put the car in the oven after the primer has been given sufficient "time to breath"....The bonnet, drivers door and rear quater inc the door shuts and A pillars have been done, and so has some of the roof.
Really happy with it so far, the prepper is as anal as me!!! SAturday is the passenger side and rest of roof, then its ready for paint by next saturday...according to the owner.
Anyway the only pics that for some reason stayed on the camera are these ones....
Had a few rocker covers powdercoated aswell. One is a silver colour the other is a standard ford shade.....Not sure what one im gonna use yet, what you lot think???
Thats it for now, ill be going back saturday to get the ones that i deleted....
