fiesta wheel question

i had a L reg 1.6 zetec before and fitted some escort 14" alloys with 185/60/14 tyres on it and it drove terrible and felt like it was tripping over itsself.
i put the xr2i wheels on it and it was 100% spot on!
now i have another 1.6 zetec L reg and want to fit some wheels to it.
i have two sets of escort wheels but dont want the same thing to happen.

my S reg fiesta has 14" escort wheels and tyres but it drives spot on!

i know they are slightly different but is this just down to the castor settings on the newer fiestas?
has anyone got 185/60/14 on a mk3 fez?
