Fiesta Xr2i electrical nightmare!!

Postby Ruaraidh on Sun Sep 01, 2013 5:35 am

Hello folks,

Today I have spent my day off welding in my roll cage to my xr2i rally car project. I removed the dash, which was carefully all unplugged, all the cage feet fabricated up and welded in cage in etc then replaced the dash after cutting the top for the bars to go round.

So anyway it came time to refit the dash, and after putting everything together nothing will work!

When the key is turned to the first click, the fuel pump somtimes primes as normal, but theres no dash lights apart from the indicator and full beam bulb?! Then on turning the key nothing happens apart from full beam lights up, the rear lights stay on solid until you turn the key, the windows wont go up or down, when you actually turn on full beam normally nothing happens, basically everything is going crazy?!

I've had a good read through the thread on this forum, but im not sure if the ignition relay which a lot of people mention could be causing all these problems!

If anyone has any ideas that would be fantastic :)

Thanks!

Did you remove the battery on the car or at least the earth from it before undertaking the welding????

Sounds like you haven't reconnected all the earth wires!

Yep battery removed as I always do when welding.

the earth was a thought I had but the thing is I didn't actually undo any earths at the dash at all! The only one I can see earthi h near the dash is the one on to the steering column bracket which I didn't take off. :( nightmare!

There is an earth in the drivers foot well right next to where the bottom of the cage is

Sorry yeah there is that one too,|

To weld the foot in i took this off and unclipped the wiring and just sat it outside the door,
I took this off and gave it a clean but still no joy haha

Thanks for the help so far! Any other suggestions? Do you think I should have a try with the relays?

Just I case anyone is interested it turned out to be a loose connection at the ignition barrel where the remains of dodgy immobiliser wiring were!
