first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto!
hmm me and my grandfather are doing a little thing between us
he buys the car after i source it, check it and value it damage and resale for profit, im also the restorer in the pair
the car we've come across, well understatement to be honest we've bought it, it as all the cars were gonna buy has a problem, it needs some welding done, alot infact
the offside lower suspension mount, upper suspesion mount (this is a litrate hole, can see the floor through it)
i will be replacing the offside sill as its had too much welding and has a few holes in it
the rear seat belt ancorage (very common on mk3's, my old 1.1 needed it in three different places lol)
and a few other things including ineffective offside rear brakes and handbrake, im having this very problem with my own (red car) at the moment too lol and the mot is next friday :S
time for some pictures
by the way, can anyone confirm the colour for me, ill need to know for the paint cans in the near future, thanks
its frascati trim level, has a healthy electrics pack including boot popper, central locking, electric windows, power steering
as you can see its N reg 1995 and is a 3 door, 1.3 hcs (same engine as my own in the mk4, except mines multi-point fuel injection)
ill update this thread as i get work done, if anyone is intetered in buying this when its done please let me know
work will start after sunday, i gotta pic up my just purchased mig welder from shrewsbury :S and i gotta kick my dads capri out of the garage again...

Re: first of many projects, 3 three's 1.3 mk3 3 door
ok small update, with no progress albiet
just some more pics with more of the repairs needed included
just a general nose around the girl
firstly the worst spot, and by far the scariest
incase your deaf dumb and blind thats the rear right/offside top mount of the suspension, i plan to cut a sheet of templated steel to contour the strut housing and back of the seat belt mount and after treating/grounding out all the rust and worst of it i can, i will weld two plates in, one stretching far past the borders of the actual rust for improved strength, and then again from underneath, ill be removing the whole beam and struts ( explain in a mo, as well as excess to the underneath of the turret)
the sill no pictures of it, but its pretty much a bit of everything, thick undercoat over sill itself guards reduclasly thin sheet steel welded rather poorly here there and everywhere, and some other spots of rust and a hole inside of the door on the sill
after some inspection this may be removed for a new sill all together.
second big part of the welding is the rear seat belt anchors and the rear beam mount both have "excessive corrosion" in the words of the mot failure sheet, so the beam will be coming off to excess the mount, ill be welding a templated plate of steel over where it mounts after drilling out the hole where the beams bolts go through into the chassis, hopefully the thickness of the steel wont have any effects on the geometry of the rear suspension, i dont think it will since it will be thin 3mm or so steel, or i may do the near side just for good measure also
next part of sizable rust is here in the seals of the sunroof, proof sunroofs are a bad idea
ive seen that these sunroofs can be removed easily (or so it seemed) and then i can start some treatment on it, either the cheap and easy way of grounding bad spots out and using cure-rust on it then filling and painting, or getting it all out and plating then filler and painting it, we will see
although its now secure thanks to some hefty screws on the part of the previous owner, a broken mirror lets it down, im sure i can get a replacement for £10-15 quid, i may even colour code them, depends if i have much paint to spare
steering wheel is way past it, spongy, chunks missing and a massive what i can only guess to be a big fag burn, so either a repalcement (nervious about it since i still aint reconnected my own airbag so dont know what will happen to this one) or a suitable wheel cover, both will be similar in price
nothing bad here just a nose around
first of the paintwork scratches, offside door
another, offside rear quater
tail gate right of wiper
and left of wiper
and finally a general picture of the car back home in the garage, also i like this shot
all for now, the mig will be collected on wednesday so work will commence either later that night or thursday

Re: first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto
anyway been busy bee tonight on the mk3
welded the two plates over the massively corroded area on the o/s/r strut
as they say, a picture speaks a 1000 words
my template, using some cardboard
then outlined the shape to my sheet metal
after some tedious cutting
i then treated the rust itself on top and underneath
and after about 30mins of welding lol, hard to reach places and awkward to get a welding gun into even more!
and underneath
will be slapping some underseal/hammerite over these tomorrow

nice job on the welding
mines got rust in that exact same spot the size of a cheery bakewell.
keep meaning to attack it but it will need welding too me thinks.

You're right, they can't. Just asked my mate who does mots every day and they can't remove any body panel such as side skirts or any interior panel such as trim

Double skinned in that area, that's the problem.Moisture gets up in there from the wheelarch.
The turret tops are a seperate peice and spot welded in. TBH I would use 2mm plate in that area.

Thats one of my favorite colours. Did I see this car on ebay the other day, for like £75? I thought about it, but decided against it when I saw the rot! I think you will struggle to make money on a car like that tbh, but good luck to you!

if it was from bridgend in south wales then yea probs was this very car lol, my grandad knows the guy so he ended the auction
what are your reasons for thinking that, can i ask? surely if the rots repaired its good enough for someone who doesnt particually want a perfect shell?

Re: first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto!
i think what nomad is getting at mate, is even with a full MOT on it and all the work done, the tops your see back for the car is about £500, and thats prob gunna be about your max, be ready to get between £300 and £500 for it i would say, so really, do the bare min it needs for MOT and get shot of it.
i give you credit for the work your doing to it though, but tbh mate, you should of passed it up, the rust on the roof is fairly bad, and with something like that a bodge up grind and filler isnt going to last, and if painting with rattle cans it will look, in all honesty, $hit, the only way to make it look good is a full blow over, but you got to ask your self, is the car worth the cost of the paint, time and effort, and sadly i dont belive it is mate, unless you plan to keep it for your self, then the time and effort is nothing as its for your self, but to tart up and knock on for a profit, i dont think your make any/much.
apart from that, i think your doing a good job on it so far and keep the good work up, but please bear the above in mind

Re: first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto!
i 100% understand what your saying mate, and i knew that id only be getting a max of £500 in return come sell day
i aint trying to be arragant here, but ive spent vertually nothing on her so far, £100 for the car and £5 on a tin of underseal which can a used on other cars in future including my own, the MiG i bought as i need it for more than just this project and even my own car as the mot proved.
i plan to buy the following before a sale
after a service of both filters, oil and plugs, some cans of green paint, laquer and primer, this all comes to around £50, a steering wheel and a general hoover and wash
also taking in mind that im without a proper job atm and have little to do other than play on the Xbox and do basicly nothing constructive, so this car not only gives me something to do, but its my hobby, a good way to train and learn about the cars and hone my skills at welding, car mechanics, painting and what else maybe involve, that alone is worth £100 to me
and finally please dont judge me on this, but so far this car has been funed by my grandfather, A to keep me occupied and for experiance, B to try to get a profit, to split evenly at the end by selling the car, and C to use up some of my parts that ive accumialted over the various cars ive take them off, since many cars that are written off that are this age are only down to simple things liek boots, lights and bumpers, i have a good supply and can easily get more of i dont have them
again trying not to sound headstrong but i cant see how i can go wrong thus far, this car shouldnt cost much imore than £200 exluding mot to get done, so even if it sells for £300, i should still be in for a profit of some sort
i greatly appreciate your opinions and thoughts though guys

Re: first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto!
personally ic ant see me goign wrong with this car
It aint cost much so far, if it goes funlumps up, ill brake it and scrap it
BAM £60 and tons more parts for me to use in the future 9although i may wanna think about better storage options) including electric windows, central locking, a boot pop (another one) and even PAS
but id ahve to reconise if its no good before i spend money on the service or paint as thats more money by then

Re: first of many projects, my mk3 1.3 in mint green resto!
fair play to ya mate.
dont get me wrong im not having a pop or anything and completely understand where your coming from, and doing this sort of thing is a great way to learn.
all im saying is maybe you should of got one with less to do in a way, i.e the scratched paint work, being this colour its a metalic and there hard enough to blend in even with the right stuff, rattle cans you stand no chance tbh mate, it will show up like a sore thumb, there for i would advise a touch up pen, yeah it will show and stick out, but not as much as a bad spray from a spray can, more so this time of year as its so cold the paint will bloom, the clear will run, so if you do go for the rattle can, make sure work area is warm and really the car panels are warm
good luck with it mate, didnt mean for my first reply to come across as a pop as thats not what i was doing
