Fitting 6 Speed Box...
Fitting 6 Speed Box... into a MK3 of course.
Anyways, simple questions about fitting a ST170 Getrag 6 Speed box.
I understand the engine mount part of it, thanks to Lukes thread with some good photos in
I understand that it is cable shift, so I will need to fit that and mod the bulkhead for that to go through, fair enough.
But my questions are:
What about driveshafts?
What to do about the brake servo arrangement?
Is it worth the hassle??
Cheers

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
ive been looking into this too and from what ive read it dont look too bad,
im planning on ether chopping and welding focus and mk3 shafts together for a legnth then getting some made at recoprop or simalar or if you use mk 3.5 hubs there the same spline as focus hubs and one of the driveshafts are a straght swap and the other needs modding, im sure the servo can stay as hasnt gary still got one on his...?? sure one of the guys still has....??

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
ive done some reading up on the various threads. As far as i can gather, you have to use a pedal box and remote servo for the brakes due to the gear linkage arrangement being in the way of the standard brake bar servo setup. Obviously need a pedal box for the clutch due to it being hydrolic. You could mod a mk5 one for that if you figured out how to keep the brake servo. Apparently the mini cooper uses same box so you could use that linkage setup which saves space so might be possible to keep the servo. I think i'll go with the pedal box idea. Mounting the gearbox doesnt look too bad. So should be a fairly easy fitment overall after the faffing with the pedal setup. Id say its worth it specially if running the power ... So the driveshafts can be used from the focus? Just need the length sorting out? Cheers.

look at garys thread mate he has the easyest and simplist way of installing it and has proven results a few times, thats the way il be doing it,
im sure jimmys will be difrent as hes using a duratec engine and has had to change bell housings to a duratec one so i wouldnt use that as a refrance
edit, have a look here buddy

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
I wouldnt say the Manj was big budget compared to the others.. as the manj is just a RS1800 with ST170 engine/box plumbed in basically

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
If you have any questions please feel free to PM me.
The spec of the box set up is all down to the power you wish to run through it.
Im afraid however where the st170 box is 6 speed its much much broader in width than any other.
You need to change alot of parts to make this fit therfore, even down to lowering the gearbox cradle.
However dependant on power depends on what needs to be done...
Its by far the best mod i have fitted BUT im facing issues with gearing at mo as topspeed is not enough for me.

thought youd disapeared mate!
when i fit mine ill prob have a bios box too but i thought it may of fit without removing the servo.... but as you say the extra gear must put a bit more bulk to it i supose!!
can you not find a higher ratio gear for number 6 for your car??... and wheres the updates? lol

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
Im still kicking about, had a few months off from the Fes and have been tinkering with my Series 1
Im afraid the issue with the 6 speeder is its design. Where it runs /spilts the gears onto two lay shafts you cant just slot a taller 6th on.
I have my dream box (gearing) drawn up currently with a gearbox company but the price tag is something at the moment im not preparred to outlay.
This is for a straight cut dog kit gear set which is set to topout at 7500rpm on 15s at 186ishMPH
The Issue with the brake setup is the master cylinder as the weight/linkage for the cables sits exactly in its place.
This is the biggest ballache of the whole conversion

Re: Fitting 6 Speed Box...
what box did sunny use to acheive 179mph a few years back??
whats involved in the gear cutting?? is it highly specilised? never took a box apart as id be in fear of it never working again, or having 5 reverse gears! lol
as for the servo what about using the mondeo servo or is it at the base of the master cyl the cables attatch?

Sunny had a 5 speed box with a revised long 5th gear for topspeed
With regard making the gears its pretty specialised.... the dremel and a slab of steel wont work
Looking at 4k for a custom gear kit

lol i was thinking more along the lines off milling it on a cnc with tool steel or something then having it hardened too!
4k is an overkill whats the st170 box max out at? 150 ish?
