I am sure it has been discussed but i need some info on the above. I have a bloke that does all my spraying and does a kickass job of it, but he aint cheap about 20 quid an hour, so i dont want him to waste time. He is willing to do me a flush boot but he hasnt done 1 b4 and is worried about the shere amount of filler to be used, also i know a metal plate needs welding in but does it get packed away from the original boot with spacers or what?

all help and advice will be returned with pints of alcohol depending on quality!

*Best* way to do it is to completely cut out the recess of the number plate (if you get what I mean, so none of the boot is a recess - there is just a gaping hole) and then weld a metal plate on from the inside of the boot. There will now only be a hole to fill as deep as the metal of the boot!

How many pints does that earn me?

why not do what rob suggested, i.e weld a plate from the inside, then stick another plate on top of this to fill the recess, then just a tiny amount of filler would be needed to cover up any gaps!eh presto!  :Q

I was gonna do mine that way but it looked like cutting it out would be very close to the bottom edge of the boot. In the end mine had a plate cut to the shape of the recess and seam welded to the outside. Then all the welding was grinded back and only a small amount of filler was needed to smooth over the welds. This way the bootlid is unlikely to rust as quickly as cutting a big piece out & should be a lot more sturdy

It cost me about £150 to get it flushed, dewipered, delocked & sprayed but that's only [ERRR] my mates a sprayer & another mate is a dab hand at welding. I would've paid around £300 if I had've went to a place like Premier motorsport who specialise in that sorta thing.

LOL!
it seams very expensive for what it actually is
i have a plan ( sighs of "not another crap plan " are heard )

cut out the reces.. then u can get this heavy duty metal bonder... use that to hold the plate on from behind.. then fill in the small gap
dont say it'll fall out... as the etal is only thin anyway! and it should hold it very well (heavy duty dont forget )
anyway i might experiment as i have a spare tailgate anyway
could i cut out the recess with a dremel?? its just that the disks i got with it wont cut wood! let alone metal
