Ford Lock Barrels.

Postby Ollybee on Wed Jun 28, 2006 10:30 am

How are the lock barrels trained to a specific key? Are the tumblers cut specifically to the key code or is it done differently?

Reason I ask is there seems to be many cheap lock sets on egay however they come with keys and are therefore already setup. Can a lock which is already setup be setup again to a different key?

Cheers.
Those that can, do; and those that can't, talk about it.

the tumblers inside the lock are numbered 1-4 and your key has a code which is 6 digits long i e 114232

this is then put in a carrier and that in to a main barrel this then is assembled for the door

all locks are made in the same way, they are set to a certain key. yes locks can be re-pinned/levered, they can also be set to a grandmaster key, master key, sub master kay and individual keys and so on and so forth. there are 4 pins that are used the others just sit in what is known as a talon which is actually the bit which throws the lock if the pins are lined up correctly.

Simple answer yes they can be changed

useful answer. there is no point as it is too time consuming to be seen as cost effective.

quicker to make up a new barrel to the code you want it made to.
