Ford newbie!

Postby tdwindustries on Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:50 pm

Hi I am new to Fords - have got a 1990 XR2i - standard. Been searchng through old posts on here for 2 days and cant really find much tuning help!

Its a 1.6 8v... so could people point in the right direction:

1. Want to keep it fairly standard, all modding is for speed/handling
2. Dont want to swap engine
3. What is the engine code?
4. DO you think I can get second hand gas flowed heads?
5. What kind of power can I get from standard engine?
6. What mods does everyone recommend?
7. Anything likely to fall off in next few months? Common problems I should check?

Thanks for all help! Cheers

I done a rebuild like nearly two years ago done 16k miles onit so far
its quick but 130@bhp (108 bhp is standard on the xr2i) is like the standard FRST,

U can explore thorrtle bodies and super chip
but i think its not worth it anymore.. i only did the rebuild cuz the engine went booom. plus i get bored width the same power

hope this helps

Good work, thats a lot of work. I agree about superchip, but not throttle bodies.

My problem is time and money, the great thing about this car seems to be everything is dirt cheap and lots of Ford parts are useable between models. So I am looking to do it all on the cheap/free. :)

There must be so much kit knocking around now second hand - including superchips just got to track it down.

Thanks for the info - 130BHP is very good figuure

common problems are rust.

fuel cap
bottom of doors
arches
sills
seat supports underneath car
boot

then theres the tappets, fuel lines may need changing if there original ones because they tend to rust aswell, which i found out myself when my old car sprung a leak
gear box mounts go quite often, just buy some uprated ones and you'll be fine. cant think of anything else mate. please add to the list if i've missed anything out.............

By this point the simplest thing you could do to improve the power would be to rebuild it, even if too standard spec. Most of these engines are getting pretty tired and are down on power.

A rebuild would have it back like new :Q
