FRST and tuning the little un? Help Please!

Postby Studly on Sat Jul 13, 2002 12:10 am

Hey guys n gals, I'm looking at various FRST's at the moment, and was wondering what I would need to do in order to have around 200 BHP on tap, so far from looking around I've realised I'll need:

Uprated injectors, cam, forged pistons (possible lower compression?), Turbo work, fueling, oil breather/seperator, filter, exhaust etc.

I've got a T3 from a S2 (I think its got the holes for the water cooling?) and a ERST manifold (will this fit on?), I've read about getting the rad and intercooler modified for the above to fit.

My questions are:
Do the rods need upgrading?
Are the pistons neccesary for this amount of work?
What chip is best (I've heard bad rumours about Superchips Stage 2)?
Does the fuel pump need upgraded?
What spec of exhaust (ie Exhaust ID?) are peeps running?
Anyone have experience of the PACE chargecooler, does it work better at cooling than say an upgraded PACE Intercooler?

Any help greatly appreciated, I should have a bit of money left over from selling my Mondy to fund the above. I can do most of the mechanical work myself as well.

Cheers peeps :P

Uprated bosch beige 701s will flow more fuel and are needed for a 2er
more boost will be needed so a hybrid turbo advised group a uprated fuel pump will be needed.

Get ure car live mapped is the best option ! plug and play chips are just that get it set up proper by a pro ! ahmed charges arround £600 to do this

Stu at MDevelopments blackpool will charge u £400 he is good

Pace hmmm speaking to the people from the RSOC at my local meet in Bristol they reckon is crap sure its better than normal but for the money u want ultra low ACTs. Sunny here has a pace chargecooler he reckons is s**t also

GRS make a serious intercooler ! only good things heard about these snother option is to make ure own custom intercooler with a cossie item !

but for 200 horses an uprated intercooler will be required

I got a mongoose exhaust love the burble it makes

Standard FRST and indeed all turbo engine pistons are Forged !

the idea behind low compression allows you basically to run more boost meaning more fuel meaning more power.

Ive just been informe dlow comp is not needed to reach 200

one thing you forget to mention is headwork and cam!

no good having all that extra in the cylinders if the head cant get rid of it quick enuf ! A piper 285t2 wil sort you out and some porting and polishing of the head wouldnt go amis.

so

injectors
more boost (new turbo and chip to allow)
cam
fuel pump
uprated cooler
chip or custom map
zorst

just double checked that with my man PhilM he seems to think a CVH could push 200 with that !

give it a try see wot u get !

i reckon ull need a bit more than just that to see 200 though

Cheers m8 much appreciated, you don't happen to have a web address for GRS do you? Good news about the pistons means I can spend the money on the brakes!

I was going to get myself some OZ wheels (15") and some coilovers and have some fun!

Have you had any experience with Hi-Spec brakes, a set of lightweight billet 4 pots on the front sounds like a good idea especially with my heavy right foot!

Thx again

For reaching a true 200bhp it would be highly recommended to upgrade the bottom end. On average a bottom end can take approx 50% more power........you will be going over that.
It's all very well having 200bhp, but reliability will be required or you wont have 200bhp for long ;)

You also forgot about the gearbox.....you will need to upgrade that also and an upgraded clutch will be needed.

Yes and Yus

I use M10 x 30mm bolts for the fronts and 5 small m10 spacers per bolt so a total of 20.

fits and works a treat ask Phil M

rears ! R2k can be good but they are a drum/disk setup!

ulimate is escort cossie up the back using brackets this is a little more tricky ! Cossie clint did this to an escort and can supply ALL the parts ! he shows how to do it here http://users.turbosport.co.uk/cossieclint/s1rearbrakes/s1rearconv.htm

The fronts have to be 4x4

sierra 4x4 discs are 278mm and escort cosworth disks are 280mm i think calipers are more or less the same ! the 4 pots from a 2 door wont fit !
