FRST Gearbox or ERST Gearbox with LSD

CVH and Zetec tuning, suspension and braking mods.

My gearbox is knackered and I want to replace it, prices for a ERST gearbox with the LSD seem to weigh in about £160 more than the FRST gearbox.

What advantage/disadvantage would having the LSD give me, bearing in mind its running standard power at the moment on a high mileage engine.

I do lots of motorway mileage and will eventually get more power, but going to wait until next september when i got 5 years no claims.

I heard that having a LSD will reduce power going to the wheels but help with traction, can someone tell me the pros and cons so I can make the decision as I'm going to do it within a week or two, i've already researched the prices.

Also when it gets replaced I was told that I should change clutch too since its easy done when the box is off cos it needs to be put on the new box anyway, was gonna go standard and was told that paddle clutch would be very on/off style without much control (IE pain for traffic jams etc), any advice on clutch also useful

Cheers in advance for any advice.

I wouldn't bother with a LSD unless you are going to be running lots of power.....i.e: 200bhp
I have a stage1 and i dont have a LSD and i dont think i need one, i just "feather" the accelerator to stop wheel spin and get traction........LSD is cheating  lol

If you are changing the clutch to i would recommend an Ap uprated clutch, which has an uprated friction plate. This will take a lot of power, so you dont need to go for a paddle clutch.

cheers

How much is an AP Uprated one and what will it give me over a standard one?

Apart from it being cheating will it actually slow me down by having it on a standard FRST?

Think it's 150ish for AP.

As far as I've experienced thru e hard way, LSD is the way to go if u'r going for straight line pick up from stand still. Or u wish 2 do some pro drive.

AP Paddle Clutch is different yet again isnt it, I was told that they are practically either in or out! I need more control than that!

How come ESRT box for £150? I was quoted £360 exchange for FRST one or £510 exchange for a ERST!

The Paddle clutch is harsh yes, but well worth it, you get used to it and its not noticable in traffic..

Is it not worth getting a recon one then? I've always thought that getting second hand parts could be great but then again could be a waste of money and could wreck your car if it locks up at 100mph!!!

LSD is poo, once the wheels are spinning they just screw sideways across the road! LSD is for rwd cars, if you can get an orion 1.6 mk4 box in there, well that is if you want to go off the clock! Plenty strong enough fo what ever you got.

Have been speaking to a few people and they all say that paddle clutch is nightmare in traffic etc. I'm really after uprated so I phoned SCC and they said I can get an EBC 20% uprated clutch for £160, anyone know about these? Also they said theres a non paddle AP clutch but its £240!!!

This compared to a standard one at £90, any thoughts?

i only went for LSD as all the boxes i wanted to get were the same price anyway so get extra for my money

as far as clutches go i got a standard clutch for my 2i with the 2 litre in it and it's handeling the extra power fine

i would have put the diesel clucth and fley wheel on but the fley wheel weighs a ton but the clutch is litrealy twice the size. might be worth a look at
