FRST rebuild *Engine is back in 24/09/2012*
I thought I would start a new topic for this car, it is well know on this forum but it has now changed hands. Greg (fezzy turbo) did some amazing work on this car but it was put on hold for a while,
The car loaded up ready to head to mine
Recently I was fortunate enough to be in the position to buy this car so now I will finish the work started on it, unfortunately pictures just don't do this car justice and when you see it in real life you will understand why.
Gregs work done previously
When i collected the car it had the carpet, dash, centre console, headlining and the drivers side top part of rear bench.
Only spent an hour or so on it today, but a few little bits done, got to properly empty the van soon as somewhere in there are all the screws/bolts to fix everything into place. everything going back in is being cleaned front and back before going in the car
other side of rear bench fitted
passenger recaro in place
uncracked passenger side hockey stick found and fitted

Re: FRST rebuild
What material have the seats been covered in looks very nice mate. The amount of work gone into this is unreal and it needs to be put back together and enjoyed once more. Good luck I hope all goes well

Re: FRST rebuild
They are standard Fiesta RS Turbo seats, I believe the trim is called Ascot raven for the patterned bit and Ascot shadow for the grey. definately planning on enjoying it a lot when it built up

I think it's just how the photos have come out making it look like they're different to normal FRST trim!
Coming on well, Tony! Looks just as clean on the inside as the out!

Re: FRST rebuild
I wasnt saying its not the correct trim.
Its a very clean Rs Turbo interior. The post above mine was talking about a re-trim, so i was going to ask..IF it has been re-trimmed, where did you get the correct Ascot Monroe Benneton cloth as i would like to buy some.
I take it has not, and is just a very nice original trim!!!

Re: FRST rebuild
Update: it was dry today well bits of it were and I managed to raid about in the van a bit, found the turbo I was after.
Compressor housing
Exhaust housing
had a check of it physically, very minor up/down movement in the shaft, all turns freely and no visable damage to the turbines, looking good so far, but not knowing the history it was packed up for reconditioning, hopefully a new set of bearings and new seals is all i will need.
useful box found and some bubble wrap that was lurking in the back of the van
And it is being picked up tomorrow, should see it back in a 3-4 days with new bearings and seals

Re: FRST rebuild *turbo reconditioning* 04/07/12
The company I am using is Turbo Centre UK, called them up and spoke to them, very reasonable people,
when they get the turbo they are going to strip it down and contact me about what needs doing.
Cost, well that depends what needs doing I can't tell you that one yet

Nice one mate, glad you're cracking on with it!
When I've got some spare time I'll come up for or day or two to help out. There's a pub just round the corner from you that has a motel-like thing out the back so will book in there.

A little up down movement is normal on some T2 variants (shaft in out), side to side is a no-no though. Not worth cutting any corners on this car though

Yeah would rather have it checked, than build it up and put some turbine through the inlet system

If you need it, I have a spare t25 - the inlet side turbines are shot though. Maybe make two out of one (or go t3).

Re: FRST rebuild *turbo reconditioning* 04/07/12
Right turbo issues,
The turbo i sent for reconditioning was unknown, since it has been stripped i have found out the following.
Inlet side is a modified T3, Exhaust side is a T04b internally, it is running a larger shaft for which both turbines have been modified and is running 360 degree thrust bearings.
Is this going to be any good on this engine:
JE pistons, H-section rods, std crank, Cylinderhead Developments 'ultimate' CVH head with kent 35 camshaft : all balanced and assembled by Agra in Dundee.
it sounds like a very high spec turbocharger, but may end up causing a lot of lag. opinions please.
found this which seems to be what sort of spec it is: T3/T4 Turbos
200 - 600 HP The T3/T4 hybrid turbo consist of a T3 turbine section, (Stage I, Stage II, Stage III or the Stage V trim) and a T4 compressor section (T04B trim or T04E trim). This combination offers the low inertia and fast boost responce of the lightweight T3 turbine wheel and the high-airflow characteristics of the T4 compressor family. All T3/T4 hybrid's are custom matched for specific applications. Airflow ratings from 200HP to over 600HP are available. Ball bearing option also available.
any help or opinions appreciated. Tony

Re: FRST rebuild *turbo reconditioning* 04/07/12
Surely with it having a t4 hot side and larger t3 cold side it should spool up quicker and provide good boost. It won't take any longer to spool up as the compressor housing is still a t3.

Re: FRST rebuild *turbo reconditioning* 04/07/12
New parts for the car have arrived
today i recieved my airtec stage 2 single pass FMIC, not looking forward to trimming the front end to fit this but needs must. just a little one at 545mm x 330mm with a 60mm core have 2 slim line fans for the radiator so air coming the intercooler can keep going and cool the water aswell. and an 82degree thermostat so i can keep it running a bit cooler with the fans kicking in earlier

Re: FRST rebuild *fun with parts*
pics are a bit blurry but didn't really have the time to get the camera and keep him sitting there
not much of an update for the car but my youngest had great fun in the dining room
He seemed delighted in his finding something to sit on and claiming the piston
eventually he gave it back

Re: FRST rebuild **engine update**
Right a bit of an update, have been sorting out starting a business and going on holiday so the RS was left alone for a bit.
Since going to Trax this weekend in our runaround focus, seeing all the cars has got me going with building it back up again.
The engine now has the helix 4 paddle clutch fitted, the quaife stage 2 gearbox, new clutch release bearing, cleaned up the thermostat housing, the fuel rail, the lower part of the inlet manifold, retaped the wiring for the injectors couldn't find any black electrical tape so used red as the rst is red, after doing this decided I didn't like it so got some black tape and re did it. Have fitted the coilpack holder, put the new thermostat in the housing at which point I realised I don't have the thermostat retaining clip, fitted the oil pressure switch, the temperature sensor. Cleaned up the plates that mount to the gearbox and the gearbox mounts, and the bit before the oil filter, decided they weren't looking their best so have sprayed them black.
Still got a way to go but the engine is coming together now, just need a new gasket for the bit before the oil filter, a thermostat retaining clip, and some bolts to hold the coilpack on, I have a new engine mount but still havent found the bit that fixes to and bolts to the block, will keep searching but may be asking for parts in wanted soon.
more pics to follow tomorrow

Yeah good job I built the table so know it could hold the weight of a full engine and gearbox setup. That said think I may be annoying the family a little bit. Just a little bit though

** pics sorted**
Got a bit more done today, must admit had some very interesting moments.
Thankyou again to nomad for the loan of the engine hoist, wouldn't have liked to do this without it, although I did consider blow torching the legs and bending the ends of them it a bit with a club hammer as it was about 2 inches too wide to go through the door frame.
so after fixing up one of my ratchet straps to the lifting eyes, lifted it up of the still intact table, swung it round to the doorway between dining room and kitchen, fortunately I had the help of my father in law which was very useful but ended up with my mother in law and Nikki helping and holding everything steady while we lowered the engine to the ground, folded the hoist up, heaved it over the engine that was blocking the doorway, and then unfolded it, lifted the engine and started this routine all over again.

a few more pics of the engines travel, and its rear seat it was sat on so it was comfy when back on the ground

Got a few more bits done today, yet never ending there are still more,
throttle body fitted
vibra technics gearbox mounts
few more pics of the engine
and altenator mounting bracket, adjusting rod, and gearbox mounting being painted
few more bits to paint up and fit on hopefully will get more done tomorrow, and the family is quite happy that our dining table is almost usable again
