gearbox's for a 2l zetec convertion? diesel, lsd, RS?

Postby drsmith on Wed Feb 16, 2005 2:13 pm

thinking about dropping in a modded 2l zetec lump and was wondering whats the best option with regards to the gear box? what is everyone running in here? id be tempted with a rst lsd box but its finding a non 'shagged' one for not stupid money! ive heard the diesel box also has strengthened internals so is that a good option with regards to ratio's etc... how about a rs1800 box? is that diff to the cvh and zetec xr2i box's? be interested to know as i dont want to fit the engine and then go to all the trouble of dropping the gearbox out when it needs changing. rather get it right first time. opinions?

A diesel box is no stronger than an rs1800 or any other 130ps box from what i have heard. It does have a differnt ratio though and gives a higher top end at the cost of accelaration. Id go for an erst box with an lsd or the rs1800 box if you dont wanna spend out. If your thinking of upping the power though id go for a CTS stg1 or stg2 box as i was blowing std rs1800 boxs up at a stupid rate. I cant recommend the cts stg2 enough though, the quaife diff has transformed the car and it handles so much better and gets so much traction in the dry.

The least you could do with is a Stage 1 CTS box or something similar, something which is rated to the power/torque you're going to be using. I'm using a Stage 1 in an ERST box, so it has an LSD.

My standard box has lasted since November so far!
If you can get another box then alls good, I'd recommend having it looked at if you buy from the scrappy/2nd hand though as you don't know the history, and like you say, you don't want to be changing it all the time.....

Oh sorry, I was thinking this was a turbo conversion, not N/A. FRST/ERST boxes should be fine right?

just out of curiousity, does the ERST lsd gearbox just fit straight onto the 2l zetec engine? or is any drilling/modding required?
