Get That Heat Out!!

Postby StreetDragster on Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:07 am

Hi All,

Right, i have decided i'm going to get the heat out my engine bay one way or another. Bascially, my car appears fine when moving, staying nice and cool on the gauge, but when i come to a stop whoosh, straight up and the fans on.

So, i'm planning on wrapping the turbo and manifold in heat wrap, maximising the distance between the turbo and the radiator, fitting a second kenlowe fan, maybe with its own fan switch, removing the rear rubber strip and then cutting a slot in the bonnet skin.

This slot will be through the skin, NOT the stiffeners, in the centre of the bonnet, above the manifold/turbo, about 4" wide and spanning the 'hump' in the bonnet. It'll be black plastic meshed afterwards.

Anyone see any problems with this? I know it'll get the turbo etc wet when it rains, but its not outside in the rain that often anyway, and the turbo will burn it all off in no time usually.

Thanks

Matt

be careful when wrapping the manifold in heatwrap as i have heard they get TOO hot and crack...with mine, i have only wrapped the downpipe and saw a slight drop in temps...i think the biggest problem you will have is the turbo so close to the rad...

IIRC Sunny's temps were fine as soon as he relocated the turbo ontop of the gearbox

you could also have a trial run of lifting the back of the bonnet a touch to get the heat out?

what about getting the manifold coated in that white stuff...ceramic coating ithink it is?

have u tried water wetter? meant to drop your water temps ALOT...Mike R runs it in the Esc Cos and speaks the world of it

Any ideas on a source of info mate? Thats contary to what i've read and i'd like to research it further

That would solve alot of problems, but its also an expensive way of doing it :(

Good idea on the bonnet, i'll try it and see what effect it has. Ceramic coating, again, expensive, does it work that well? Again, any sources?

Nope, i haven't, i'll ask Mike what effect it had for him, cheers :)

This reminds me of all my threads from a couple of weeks ago, on here and one on PF too. I've haet wrapped my exhaust manifold, downpipe all the way down and just past the sump, turbo has its insulation kit on now, and I've taken the rubber off the back of the bulkhead panels. As soon as I can drive to Fusion I'll get him to modify the cooler so I can shift it forward, then move the radiator forward up to 10mm, which would be superb. With the cooler forward about another inch or two, I think temps should be ok. Clearance between the intercooler and radiator, and radiator and turbo are pretty critical it seems. The more you have, the lower temps will be.

I'd been talking about bonnet vents, I'm sure you got involved in those convo's :-? Lanica Delta Integrale vent (long, louvred slot across bonnet) came up best for me. Have a search anyway, you'll see all the pics of bonnet vents that were dragged up :)

Yep, i was involed in that convo, its in my build thread. I'm struggling to get a lancia vent for reasonable money, i've also tried to track down an evo 2 one, but also struggling for that. This is why i'm thinking the plain 'hole int he bonnet' would be the best for reasonable money.

Thanks

Did you see Kenny's bonnet? A bonnet vent could be done extremely simply, cutting out the long front edge and two short edges of a rectangle, and folding down the section of metal that remains, then mesh the opening you're left with. Hard to find someone you know will do a good job of it though!

Yep i did, not sure if i'll have the room underneath the skin to drop it down.

I think i'm just going to cut a hole, roughly the size of a number plate in the bonnet skin and mesh it now, so much simpler and cheaper than trying to track down a decent vent. All the good ones are subtle, and not liked by chives, so arn't copied :(

Could stick a nice F50 vent on, or maybe an Evo 6, or both!

thanks

Have u thought about a side air vent on the wing to let out more hot air!

Basicly on myn im not getting anyvents onthe bonnet i got a smoothed xr2i bonnet and I have got 1 side air vent (5 little slits)
Im planning to the raise the bonnet by 1.5 inches remove the black rubber near the back and it [ERRR] be good.

I want to run two 10"inch fans on my xr2i rad as its bigger in width than the frst i have also consider getting a separte fan for the pro aloy intercooler!

we see what happens :)

Wing vents just won't cut it with the ZT heat, something in the bonnet is the only thing worth doing. I'm sure wing vents would do something when on the move (I sound as though I'm repeating myself for about the 50th time saying this....) but the main issue is getting heat out of the engine bay when the car is not moving, hence the need for a vent above the turbo.

Matt - If that bonnet isn't in great shape anyway, will you try doing it yourself? You could always angle grind anything that was left a bit ragged, maybe give it an interesting arc rather than straight lines etc? :)

Bonnets in pretty good shape actually, but i may have a go myself, the worst i can do is cut it all jagged and a bodyshop would have to cut the hole slightly bigger, no great loss

Thanks

Dont put a fan in front of your intercooler if possible, the less restrictions in front of the cooler the better.
