its a glove box, end off  door lid it dont matter, but..... if you want to look at it right, a lid is something that goes on top of something and a door is a "hinged" opening, but when it comes down to it fellas its a door and a lid in a way

like a bood "lid" or tail "gate" i.e hinged, but a car is classed as 3 door of 5 door when in fact it only has 2 or 4 doors, so im sorry fellas your going to have to agree to disagree

Seriously tho, i'm with jayrs, its a glovebox. no lid, door, flap. just a glovebox.

So, when you open the glovebox in some vehicles, they have cupholders, if its just a glovebox you will be resting your cup on the glovebox? and not the glovebox lid?

Depends really.

In my Mk6 it actually is the glove-box as the whole thing hinges down from the dashboard.

In the Mk2 the glove-box cavity is fixed in place and has a door on the front of it.

If the glove-box cavity is in the top of the dash, as it is in some cars, then it has a lid which opens upwards.

Ruishy1 :a lid usually means its removeable, so i would vote door

Actually in the strictest definition, a cover is removable and a lid is a hinged top to a container.

Cor, whats wrong with some people?

Its got two hinges and a handle, remind you of anything?

ITS A DOOR :)

A lid goes on top of something, think of the lid on a tin of beans or sweets etc.

If you go into a scrapyard and ask them for a glovebox lid they'll correct you and tell you its a door.

Family Guy quote. And I claim my free prize.

As to the topic, in most cars, the glovebox actually opens down out of the dashboard. However, in cars like the Fiesta, where the glovebox is a covered cavity in the dashboard, I have always called it a glovebox lid, and I am supported in this by the Oxford English Dictionary:

OED definition of 'lid'
As stated, 'a removable or hinged cover for the top of a container'.

OED definition of 'door'
As stated, 'a movable barrier at the entrance to a building, room, or vehicle, or in the framework of a cupboard'.

Now, I'm not sure about the rest of you, but the last time I checked, a glovebox is not a building, is too small to be a room, and is found within a vehicle... and it's only a 'cupboard' in the loosest possible sense of the word. However, it is a container whose cover is hinged, and as such I would conclude that that cover is a 'lid' rather than a 'door'. I thank you.
My name is Alex. I used to have a Capri. I don't anymore. But I'm still called Capri.
