GMax sproingers

Postby df908 on Mon Mar 24, 2003 6:16 pm

Hey ho all, I've just spent a day popping some gmax "-30mm" springs & dampers on my xr2i (8valver). Finally, it doesn't look like its a 4x4

Has anyone else noticed a drop of slightly more than 30mm with these? I got the front pair on and was, erm, surprised at the height afterwards

Also anyone else got scraping issues with 15" rims?

Ah... But its does go round corners nice now :D

Now, if I could only get those ratfink squidgy-as-a-chocolate-gateaux ford rubber bushes out, I'd have polys in there too...

I got the -60mm kit supossedly but its dropped more than 70mm on the front :o

It scraped loads on my 15's but I had the arches rolled and bumper cut+remounted to stop it. - No more problems!

I have got the supposedly 35mm drop springs, but there is no-way that the car dropped 35mm, it looks more like 50mm.
I have got 15's on it and they aint scraped once yet so you aint got anything to worry about.

If only :(

Catches the arch liners on full lock and rubs the 2i arch extensions on any sort of bump! I'll be getting them rolled then...

What size wheels are they exactly?
Mine are 6.5 x 15, I have got the same car, and they dont scrape on anything.
Also, what size tyre's have you got?
I think mine are 195 x 40 x 15.

Same as yours, 15x6.5 (Escort GTis), but I have 45 profiles though.

Are 40 profiles hard to come by?

It always seems to be 'hit and miss' with lowering. One person will do exactly the same as another and one will scrub and the other won't. Not much archwork needs to be done with 15's anyway :)

fudgekin hell!! My springs had "-30mm" written on them and its well low enough!

Not much archwork needs to be done with 15's anyway

Arch liners coming out this weekend, should fix most of the scrubbing, I gotta get behind the wheels anyways as I hadn't fixed the flexi brake hoses to the struts (I own up, I am a monkey) and that needs doing before I ruin a hose and suddenly don't have brakes! :o

Hopefully I get my electric DTMs on at the same time (pointless, but I love gadgets :D )

Er....... no.

I wish I didn't have to. But its that or scraping all the time. Or back to fireblades :oooh:

Maybe I can work something out with the liners, cut some holes where it scrubs and then put summink behind them again? Hmm...

Somethin def need doing so I can finally get my front dampers off the hardest setting

Pah! I want the same spring/damper set you've got....except my wheels already rub on full lock....with standard suspension :O.....on 2i 13"s!!! :aaah: And you think YOU'VE got it bad! I trimmed the linings down a bit last week, but they're still rubbing. Think quite a lot's gonna have to come off them :x Got any piccies of yours before/after lowering please? :)

No piccies, sorry :(

:aaah: :aaah: :aaah:

I had some arch liner rubbing with 15s. Not as bad as it is now tho.

I lied (sort of), the front dampers are spax adjustables. The back ones would have been the same, except the adjuster screws were a little rusty when I got them (already used), and after I tried adjusting them, the screws were a little broken :( Aannnd, cue phone call to xfactor...

Handling is soooo much nicer on mid/soft damper settings. Now theres some incentive to get your (yours? mine too) arches fixed :D

It'll take a little fiddling, but take them out and make some more holes/brackets to mount them slightly higher and further back. This is what Ade has done with his 18's (pretty sure of this) :)

Well cut out the bits near the centre so it clears at the inside front edge of the wheel, thats got rid of 90% of the rubbing :) Might well drill some more mount holes and get it back and up about 10mm, should cure the rest :)

i fitted my gmax kit yesterday -35mm on 16's would like to say it handles a lot better but i cant find out cuz it rubs too much  but the car is solid, no body roll and its alot stiffer but by no means harsh. good job but i can only just make it into the drive way

Probably yeah, 45 profiles are a better bet as they keep the overall wheel radius the same so speedo & accel don't change. 50s would make your speedo underread and slow your accel :(

i had G-max springs on mine, which were supposedly -60mms-the exhaust was 40mm off the ground in the middle section,it was impossible to drive over anything which resembled a hill, even at any sort of speed over 30mph sparks could be seen out of the back window, the previous owner had the suspension like this for 2 years(so the only good thing was at least the car hadn't been totally ragged in this time)when i eventually bought some new 30mm spax springs and took the old ones off i realised that the g-max springs had also been like chopped in half(almost as if he'd bought one front and one back spring and cut it bang in half) and then when i put the new ones on it went about 3" higher, its now much better to drive and handles ok,but the only problem is with g-max they're too soft and bouncy not stiff enough like Koni

You like your ride hard then? :P

40mm clearance sounds a bit nasty can see why you got more springs.

I'd have thought they'd be stiffer than normal when chopped though? Maybe dampers couldn't keep up with the extra springiness hence why it was too bouncy before you got the spax?
