H543 HRW - Back to the body shop 24.11.11
Well after 7 years of ownership my Fiesta will be getting a thorough seeing to. It did have the rear arches and sills replaced in 2003 but it now needs the rear quater panel replaced and I have therefore decided to make sure that everything that needs doing gets done. I havent done much to the car over the last few years as having to 2 kids (5 years and 4 years) has taken every spare moment I had. Now they are a little more independant I seem to have a little more time to play about with the Fiesta.
As can be seen from the pictures a flushed MK5 tailgate will be added, both front wings will be replaced, together with the complete rear quater panel and off side arch. I have also got a pair of doors which have Audi A4 handles which will be going on and for the smooth look the side repeaters will be removed from the wings and the holes filled. I have a carbon fibre bonnet to go on and front door cards will be replaced with carbon fibre too. The rear cards will be replaced with MK5 ones. Puma Racing Sparco seats will go in instead of the Recaros and the rear seats will be trimmed to match. Puma dash will replace the original MK3 one.
Some of you may have seen my previous post in Modifications/Styling and you'll be pleased to know that I have decided to keep with the original RS kit instead of that 'other one'.
I cant remember anything else but if I do I'll be updating the thread which I will do with any progress. Oh yeh, I'll be putting back its original registration number of H543 HRW.
Once this has finished it will probably being going back to NMS for a GT30 conversion which hopefully will see bhp and torque approaching 400. 309bhp and 352ft/lb torque at the moment.

always loved this car,
respect for the the next phase of mods for the car,
hope it turns out how you want it,
you'll notice the puma racing seats make you feel higher up in the mk3, if your using the original puma seat base
quick question
with the mk5 rear bumper did you extend the mongoose at all?
as i had to with mine because the end pipe was inside the bumper

I'll be adapting the Recaro subframes to fit the seats and will be adjusting the hight so they'll be in the same position as the originals.
Yes, the tailpipe has been extended to fit properly.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
Took the rear seats to for retrimming yesterday. Was told they'll be about 7 - 10 days. Going to see the car tomorrow so I'll get some more pictures up if there has been any progress.

Re: Restoration of C17 KAM
bit of an update,
Picked up my re-trimmed head lining and re-trimmed rear seats today.
I am really pleased with the way both have turned out. The original Puma back rest foam was firstly attached to a 'one piece' Fiesta one and then the sides were built up to form the original shape of the Fiesta. You can see from the picture that the Puma one is way different to the Fiesta one. We couldnt find an exact match to the Puma's charcoal/blue cloth so a charcoal one was used instead. Although there is a difference its not that noticable. The bench was done in basically the same way. The Puma bench was built up at each end to follow the shape of the Fiesta one and then covered in the charcoal cloth. By doing the back rest and bench this way the original contours of the Puma seat have been kept.
Original Puma back rest. Nothing like a Fiesta one.
the roof lining was covered in a charcoal cloth. Just got to cut out the hole for the sunroof. Pictures dont do it justice. Looks really good up close.
My parents garage. Bit of a mess at the moment. They cant wait till I finish so my dad can put his Accord back in.

Re: Restoration of C17 KAM 10/05/09
Bit of an update.
Max, yes that is your rear bench !Really please with the way its turned out. Just need the car back to fit it. Hopefully they'll fit and look ok.
Progress has been slow and although I did think everything would be ready for FITP things are a long way from being completed. While the car has been in the body shop I have manged to get my interior parts flocked and I think just about every plastic part has been covered. Looks amazing. Pictures to follow. Sitech racing also built me a new inlet/plenum which will locate the throttle body to the left hand side of the engine and will get rid of the EFI one curretly used. New gear box has been ordered too. I did consider getting an MTX conversion done but in the end I decided to get CTS stage 2+ to replace my current 'normal' stage 2 'box. There is actually nothing wrong with this but I am getting a higher final drive fitted (3.58 instead of the standard 3.82) which will mean a higher top speed is achievable (already done a 159mph run ) and will easily see 60mph in second gear.
Also ordered some subframes from Sparco. I was going to modify the standard MK3 ones to fit the Racing Puma seats but decided against this when I found that some are available direct from Sparco.
I visited the body shop on Saturday afternoon in time to see the rear quarter being removed. First of all the supposedly replaced sill back in 2003 wasnt and just badly bodged and not only that the inside of the panel had been on fire!!! the pictures show the black soot which had melted the sunroof drain pipe which meant that water wasnt being channeled drained through the car and out but was just dripping inside the panel!!! this has caused quite a bad rust situation right at the botton of the inner rear sill (you can just make this out from the picture). Luckily this is repairable but you can imagine how shocked I was when I saw this. The previous body shop that carried out the work closed down - I can understand why now, and they seemed so professional.

Not nice, But all fixable I hope!
Final drive is interesting, I'm really fussy about doing 60mph in seccond gear and would like to be able to do this in my new one which will be getting a 2+ box so will have to decide if I want to do this!
Look forward to seeing everything done!

Hi mate,
all the replacement panels are aftermarket ones. I decided to fit these on the recommendation of the bodyshop and to be honest they have been made to fit perfectly. I forgot I had these pictures on my phone and as you can see the fit is spot on.
I'll pop down and get some more pictures over the weekend.

Re: Restoration of C17 KAM 10/05/09
Little update. Pictures speak for themselves.
Had a bit of a problem with the paint though. When they started to prepare the body for paint they found that the previous repray wasnt done properly and the paint was just peeling off. It was coming off in strips which meant that the the previous lot did not flat the paint at all! In some areas they didnt even bother to clean the surface and just painted over dirt. this episode has added more time to get the car finished as well as the bill.
Good thing is that its being done right now. Should be in primer next week.
The rear arches have been rolled for wheel/tyre clearance and the fronts have been cut right back and a lip folded outwards. The arch has been stretched as far as it could and the arch moldings will be bonded on.

Hi Max,
Cant believe how badly the old work was done. Just goes to show why some body shops can have such a bad reputataion. The guys that are doing it now have been in business for 30 years and one of them has been
personally known to me for about 5.
The side repeaters are being blanked off. I want the fiesta to be smooth. I have a carbon bonnet without the vents or washer jets, with the flushed tailgate and Audi handles I think it will suit it. Dont know about next years MOT though!

RS rob :painted yet???
its been sometime since I updated but yes today the car was completed and is ready for collection. I recieved a text and the last 2 pictures from the body shop. the larger pictures were taken by me earlier this week when I visited and were nearing completion. All the smaller pictures were text to me by Simon (guy doing the work) so I could monitor progress. I'll be picking the car up by the latest Tuesday so I'll be posting some better pictures then. All thats left to do now is rebuild the interior and fit the carbon bonnet.
Before the work was done the car was painted in Mitsubishi red but I have now opted for the original radiant red. I think the colour looks fatastic. Really pleased with the door handles and the smoothed front wings (indicator lights have been removed) and the new tailgate and lights.
