Having the flywheel lightened
Anyone had this done?
I believe Specialised Engines will do this but I have emailed them to check.
I was looking to get mine lightened and balenced for better acceleration.
What are the pro's and con's?
Alternativly can you just buy lightened flywheels and have those fitted straight on?
Cheeers

I wanted one too but found out it was too expensive to do just yet.
Main reason I wanted it was for the sound of a fast reving engine!

Doubt very much they do a same day service. Best to buy another second hand fly and send that off to em.
On that note, is an Escort Series 2 fly the same as a fez.

pros, urm not really needed, if ur gonna get one get a steel flywheel
think of inertia, go to light and you`ll reduce drivabilty big time, also risk of the thing exploding esp if u do standing starts never really recommend it, always recommend steel flywheel, not really worth gettin it balanced without the rest of the bottom end aswell, waste of time

Is a steel flywheel much lighter then?
A friend of mine has a tuned 3.0 V6 Calibra and having the flywheel lightened on that made a lot of difference to the acceleration, especially in the lower gears.
If the steel flywheel is lighter and would make the same difference I shall look at one of these instead.

Thanks for your help Snake
The crank position sensor, would a Fiesta turbo have one, and would I need one?
Does the flywheel directly effect what clutch I will be able to have in future?
I want to upgrade my clutch to an AP racing organic version soon as mine slips quite a bit so I would need to know that the steel flywheel would work for that too.

Yes and yes.
Stoned :Does the flywheel directly effect what clutch I will be able to have in future?
Only if you go for something non-standard to the Fiesta.

As long as the flywheel is the physically the same as the FRST one, you'll be able to use any clutch designed for the FRST.

I dont suppose anyone would know how much a normal Fiesta flywheel weighs?
Burton Power sells a steel one that weighs 3.8kg or 6.5kg including ring gear.
I dont know if I would need a new ring gear or not.
But either way 3.8kg sounds pretty light!

think they do one for 7.25 sintered clutch and one for oe clutch, liter one bein for sintered clutch(ie paddle). u can use the ring gear off your old fly if need be, confirm with burtons though that oe ring gear will fit it.

MIK3Y :So u can't use the lighter (sintered clutch) version with a AP organic clutch only paddle?
thats if its for the 7.25 clutch, lol i can`t remember off the top of my head but do know they do one for 7.25 clutches, and nope ap organic will not fit a flywheel designed for 7.25 sintered clutch

i had mine lightened and balanced with my crank and rods.
they basicaly drilled loads of holes round the outside the cps picks up off the middle of the flywheel. Cant say i noticed any major difference as my new engine is better than my old one in every way

Dont Regal only deal with Vauxhalls?
Thats where my mate took his Calibra too have all his work done.
I'll look up the solent race and rally angle tonight.
Snake, spoke to Burton Power and they can lighten my existing flywheel but they dont do a steel version due to the sensor. Seems a bit odd considering they list a steel flywheel under the Fiesta turbo section!
I'm not entirely sure what to do at this point.

Just get it skimmed then (lightened) but not too extreme to keep it's strength.
Don't u have to have ur flywheel skimmed/lightened to fit a performance clutch properly anyway?

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Escort doens't have a Crank position sensor on the flywheel.. ( the squares on the rim of the back of the flywheel)
PLEASE don't get them machined off.. they manage the ignition timing..
They did machine mine off.. the flywheel wasn't useable for the FRST anymore.. so i had to sell it.. for ERST use (-:
