jonyb4 :not in the slightest, they go on the bottom end very commonly

most of them dont reach 100k

no they don't!

Its the same with any engine, you don't put oil in, it dies. I've seen phase one ZS engines going 200k plus! You're telling me that they don't make 100k?

Three things;
  • The first was dead when I got it, I nursed it for 6 months
  • The second was on 150k, I drove it for 30,000 VERY hard miles, flat out everywhere sometimes without oil
  • Why drag me into this cause of your dislike for something?

mine was the phase 2, had some service history i serviced it was around 80k aboused for 3 trackdays was fine, as long as its been looked after somewhat they will go on.
i think that the phase 1 must just suffer a bit more when pushed and not looked after when compared to the phase 2. but there are plenty that have many miles on phase 1's that is

Friend of mine has a cammed + carbed One and it's been around the world at least 3 times... Sure the mileage is something like 140k strongest engine I know. Services every 6 months with genuine ford parts etc...

My zs was on like 115k and still going strong. Hitting the limiter from cold was a regular occurrence too.

You can cause serious damage if you hit the limiter when its hot.

You should only rag it from cold, prefferably with no oil

Jony, i should point out here i actually dont care if other peoples engines have broken for whatever reason, mine hasnt, thats all i care about.

Pouring Anti-Freeze in with the oil helps those engines with cold starts too.

people get pokey when you touch a nerve, theyre nippy and humble engines, but as a whole, very weak when compared to a zetec, hcs or cvh

ive actutally witnessed a hsc being run with next to no oil for over 3 years and it was stilling running

Jony is right.

Time to drop the 1.6 Zetec SE and fit a 1.1 HCS from a pop plus. Its the way forward.

Wayne, antifreeze is a very good tip, another, if you want the engine to move slower for increased fuel economy you can also put self raising flour in with the oil to thicken it up.

I got on eBay as soon as I heard my engine wasn't very good because it should have blown up at 100k because the Internet says so. found a couple of 1.1 hcs, but ideally want a 1.3 hcs for a bit more poke, might do a thread on how easy is it to turbo an hcs

Wayne, oil in the coolant is a good way of keeping it lubricated. The Mazda ran ok on it

Ah but then you had the side effect of the coolant pipe slipping off the back of the engine. Which reminds me of another tip, you have to fasten your hoses with cable ties as jubilee clips just aren't strong enough with the increased pressure of oily coolant.

Can you get away with doubling over an elastic band if you have run out of cable ties? Its quite a strong elastic band so it should be ok?

Only if you anchor the band to the exhaust manifold. Don't worry, you'll only be ragging it from cold so you'll be fine.

I was told it was best with these 'weak' engines to swap the coolant and oil around.
It makes it run cooler so that it cant get hot enough to break, but the coolant is just enough lubricant to keep it running ok.

Perfect!! I'll replace all my jubilie clips with exastic bands tomorrow then.

I dont know if anyone else does it, but I like to start mine with the throttle wide open and bounce it off the limiter for about 5 minutes as soon as it starts up, I heard that if you do that everyday it makes the engine produce more power because the ECU thinks its in race mode.

I heard thats how Wayne does his remaps, there was a magazine article on it a few months back iirc

As my engines well overdue blowing up ive found a replacement

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-FIESTA-1-1-MK3-ENGINE-/160685915649?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2569a07e01

Cant wait to get it fitted and enjoy a bit of reliablilty, should be more fun on track days too, as ill have the knowledge it will keep running with no oil :aviator:

Only 55k though, but he says its a quiet runner which is such a bad thing, it means that the metal in the engine isn't banging together properly. Shame.

I would go with this one personally:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIESTA-MK4-13 ... 3a6ef6a01d

Its covered over 100,000 miles so you know for a fact it will never die as its gone past the 100,000 mile marker now. Doesn't overheat - he must be using coolant in the oil, what a top bloke! And also has the usual rattle so you know its all banging together nicely!

You're onto a winner with that one if you ask me!

Yeah for sure! My old 1.3 HCS was on like 120k and it could keep up with a lot of cars!

I think a K&N will restict the power a bit, I would just leave the air filter off completely for the best results.

What are you talking about? You shouldn't be letting the engine get any air in otherwise you'll cool down the pistons and you don't want that to happen.

Henry, if you went for the 100,000 miler you won't need an exhaust either.
