Mr Sterns Website is indeed very informative! I've just spent 2hrs reading that and How Stuff Works learning about lights for no apparent reason :)

Does anyone have any good links about the design of H4 bulbs and headlamps, as I've yet to look into this? :-?

Higher colour temperature bulbs give out less lumens :) A 4200/4300K is the best bulb to get for illumination, it is the closet to daylight.

My Fiesta will be back next year with Bi-Xenons's :)

In the non-legal area, Ring produce the Sportz Blue 100/80W bulb, which is a halogen (not Xenon-enhanced), heavily blue tinted bulb. These give off a pleasant white light around the 5,000K mark, but don't give the best or most even light on the road at night, as the blue coating cuts out a huge amount of visible light. Similar bulbs are available which are only rated at 55/60W, especially those imported from Japan and Korea, and which commonly have extremely poor build quality and light output.

Ah, these would be the bulbs I've been driving around with for a year! After reading this I went and got the packaging to have look. Seems my local spares place accidently put the price sticker over the 'For Show Use Only' part. baxtered

Still, never had problems with them, and the police have never done me for them. MOT is up 1st of July, would it be a good idea to swap the bulbs out?

Yeah - a sharp-eyed MOT inspector will fail it for the headlights looking "blue" or being too intense (but they can't take the bulbs out to check them though).

(simply increasing output by 50% would not be legal) - again this is all down to the placement and size of the filament. At the peak points, a 50% increase in light output would mean a 55W bulb producing 88W.

Interesting.

I thought they were using better technologies to higher the efficiency of normal bulbs.
You know, a 55w bulb produce only around 25w of light, all other energy is wasted to heat - so I thought they were doing something like "energy saving bulbs", i.e. same amount of electricity but more to light, less to heat.

By the way, how do you know where a bulb has got Xenon in it or not? Because now every manufacturer calls their product "Super Hyper Uprate Ultra High-density Xenon Performance HID".

wywywy - a small amount of Xenon gas in a filament lamp helps the bulb to burn hotter and whiter, which increases light output a small amount.

In my humble experience, any bulb that uses the letters "HID" anywhere on the packaging is a marketing scam aimed at people too vain to buy bulbs for their practicality and too tight to pay for a proper HID system ;)

Just a quick point to add about HID xenon systems - it's UK and USA law that all vehicles fitted with xenons must have self levelling systems, and rather bizarrely, electric headlight washers fitted also. The car will not pass an MOT without these two things.

The whole blue-light thing is a bit of a grey area - the regs apparently don't specifically say you can't show blue light, so police have to prosecute under construction & use, or try for impersonation of a police vehicle (but that one's only likely to stand up if the light is moving, i.e. on your wipers, or flashing).

The E-marked sidelight bulbs by Ring, etc, are kosher and just look a touch whiter than standard.

I´m prefering the Phillips Vision + 50%. They spend a very white light and are a lot better than the cheaper ones.

I'm running the Ring Sport Blue 100w bulbs, and have been for the last 3 years. Never had any trouble with them, including MOT's.

I've just ordered a new set of the Osram Power White 100w bulbs though, and a set for the driving/fogs. Hopefully they should perform quite well.

At the moment (at least in my store) there is an offer on Super Brilliance bulbs (up to 50 % brighter) which is Buy 1 get 1 free which is basically two of them for either £12.99 or else £17.99 impending on which bulb it is

hope this helps some people :D

H4 Rally-spec 160/100W bulbs with an uprated (relay-equipped) wiring loom and properly aligned Ford-spec headlights (i.e. not the cheap Depo copies sold at motor factors').

Or the equivalent bulbs, with uprated wiring loom, in a pair of Morettes, but check for heat damage first as twin headlights have less free air to reduce bulb heat conducting into the light optics and melting things...! :oooh:

Interesting 8)

What sidelights did you use to get rid of the yellow colour?

I assume the Ring Sportzblue bulbs are your dipped/full beam lights.

I remember you posted a topic about them once.
