Heat soak/Starter motor
Just got my car running again and now im having problems with it starting when its hot.
I thought it might be the alternator at first or a duff battery, checked battery and its got about 12.7V and when the engine is running its charging about 14V. Will start fine with 12.7V but when go for a drive about 30 mins and try to restart its like the battery is flat but still has the same charge as before.
I know the starter is ok as it was on my mates car before and worked perfectly even when it was hot
I have about 1cm between the pipe and starter
Whats the best way to cure it, heat wrap the downpipe and stater motor? I was thinking of putting a little fan in to blow onto the starter, Would this work?
Never had this problem before

Change to an escort ib5 gearbox and use rear mounted started, much easier!

Re: Heat soak/Starter motor
i know this thread is old but i was having exactly the same problem. did you ever slove the prob??
My 4 branch sits like an inch away from the starter, cold start perfect, warm struggles to start, very embarising in petrol stations. i really dont want to heat wrap my exhaust, do not like the stuff, but if i must i would just wrap the part that is close to the starter. would this help?
i have seen some heat protection foil on merlin motorsport but never heard of any one using the stuff but was thinking could wrap the start motor in this. but 30quid seams abit much, there must be an easier way.
link for the heat wrap below.

Re: Heat soak/Starter motor
If you're able to get the heat protection stuff that goes under the car around the cat, and attach that to the starter motor area (not directly on the exhaust) I'd do that. This means the exhaust can shed it's heat better without forcing some heat back into the head which heat wrap can do quite easily, so unless your head cooling is good to the point of being sure I'd go with reflection instead of retention and conduction.

best mod ive ever done
not that much harder to access tbh. just means you need to lay under the car and access it from underneath.

I have the ford heat shield for the starter motor, prob quite rare now!, I lagged it aswell. Once they have been cooked though they are prone to failing all the time when remotely warm! so new starter and lag everything.

Re: Heat soak/Starter motor
As Geoff and others have said, heat wrap the downpipe for perhaps 400mm or so where the starter motor sits, and buy yourself a Ford starter motor heat shield if you can. If you can't, get creative and make one for yourself out of some 1.5mm steel/2mm ally or something, to bolt to the block and create a barrier and air gap between the starter and the exhaust. Heat does kill starter motors if it can get to them!
