Heatshield for Between T3 turbo and Starter Motor

Postby ET on Tue Feb 13, 2007 12:12 am

Just a quickie to see if anyone else has had one made/adapted for their fiesta turbo as because they are next to each other the heat from the turbo is causing the car to cut out!

Any help appreciated as i was built to drive cars and not fix them

Heat wrap the manifold/downpipe and buy a starter motor heat shield for the FRST from Ford :)

Well.. i've been in pondering about this earlier.. and i tried to fix it like below..

Most of the heat that will damage your starter isn't directly from the turbo, but from the downpipe that goes just past the starter.

I bought myself a ERST starter heatshield.
Bought myself a brand new 1.4kW starter from an escort 1.6 16v

Why this starter.. and not one for a FRST or ERST ??
Well.. that's because this is a reduction starter .. and can cope with the heat a wee bit better then the ERST/FRST one.. appart from the initial current (A) it uses is lower compared to the ERST one.. so less stress on the wiring to the battery (which is in the boot).. and the 1.4kW makes it fly when starting (-: in stead of the whining noise..

Fitting the heat shield ....drilled some holes to fit the fixing material (cause the starter is slightly different to the ERST starter)

Cut away some other parts that were in the way of fixing the electrical bits..
Made sure the heat shield wasn't ratteling
Here's the result.

Heat wrap the downpipe all the way till it clears even the sump. You dont want the exhaust heat to be also heating up the oil in the sump.
